Happy Guilted Into Buy Flowers-And-Chocolate Day, And Maybe Stand In An Endless Line For A Horribly Crowded Brunch Day for those that celebrate!

(hint: if you truly want to celebrate your mother, do what we always did for my mom, and do the buffet the week BEFORE or the week AFTER, when the buffet is better and you don't have crowds; I also used to go to the chocolate/flower stores the DAY AFTER and had gotten flowers for 90% off and chocolates for 50-75% off... 😉

@ai6yr Steak dinner comin’ up next weekend. As for this morning, we have a brand-new “not just good, but legit freaking great” shop that just opened around the corner from us in far north Dallas. Yeah, you read that right — New York bagels in (n.b.: it ain’t the water, it’s the recipe & the technique). We bought Mom an everything bagel, and an olive cream cheese schmear which we haven’t been able to find locally here in a decade. Happy wife, happy life! 🥰

Time for baking!

Also biking!

Because I'm gonna test the bike trailer hitch with the trailer while dough is rising for an hour. ^_^

New Yorkers and Montrealers can surely both agree: “That’s not a bagel”

Blame it all on a promotional stunt from a product named for another city (Philadelphia) — let’s hope it truly does end in a few days

Once upon a time, I had a direct flight scheduled from #SFO to #ORD this morning. That was canceled because it was a 737-Max, so then I had:

  1. SFO -> SEA (overnight) -> ORD, which I rebooked to
  2. SFO -> BZN -> ORD, which got canceled for weather, so I took
  3. SFO -> #EWR (I am here) -> ORD (hopefully)

The whole Midwest has highs below 0 the next couple of days, which is playing havoc with all #travel (including my better half, whose cross-country train won't be going past Denver today).

The upside is that I've found the calmest, quietest place that's ever existed in an airport to hang out. in hand (and acquired), the Terminal A in isn't the worst place to kill a few hours.

Attention expats, immigrants, and all bagel lovers in Korea! If you love those bagels, but feel like an idiot standing in line at London Bagel Museum in Jamsil or wherever, Wirye has TWO bagel shops literally 10 meters apart. One does New York style, the other reps Montreal. Louis Vita and Old Mont Bagels, respectively. Crisp crackling crust, chewy interiors. Not the notorious "round bread" you get in the chain bakeries.

Ever try a true Montreal style ? They really stand out. They're nothing like "bagels" from other places like Tim's that are basically just regular bread dough shaped in a circle. Bagel Time on Danforth offers true hand-made, Montreal style boiled then wood-oven baked bagels. The owner moved from Montreal a number of years ago to open a shop here.
When I went in today, the place wasn't very busy. I asked why.
Turns out business slowed a LOT since the pandemic. Pre-pandemic it was so busy, the places was supplying bagels to a few Loblaws stores, catering, and the owner was going to open a second shop. Now, I'm worried about their survival.
Go there, get some bagels. free. Salt free. You can even watch them make the bagels. Help keep my fave bagel supply around!

I got off the bus at St-Viateur instead of Fairmount, my mind just went “bagel street” and got off at the first I crossed. Ugh.

Trying to be better at eating before 1 or 2pm. Apppppaaaaaarently, a latte is not breakfast.

Finding these veggie breakfast sausages has been really nice. They have that peppery spice that I love from regular sausage, but don't have that meat-fat which can be heavy on my tummy first thing in the morning. (Morningstar Farms for anyone interested).

And ofc my sourdough bagel, with the really good vegan cream cheese I can't find in Canada anymore.

It’s a shame there are so many restaurants when the best food in existence is an everything bagel with cream cheese. That must be hard when they’re handing out Michelin stars. “Obviously if bagel with cream cheese was eligible it would always win but we have to convince people there is better food that exists.”

You’ve had other food that’s as good as an everything bagel with cream cheese, but you’ve never had anything better.
