Hey ,

Is anyone out there using FOSS for accounting?

I'm struggling with Quickbooks desktop (which you can only get as a subscription now, unless you pay four figures for an enterprise license).

comes highly recommended to me, but I'm loathe to go "" for accounting. Very loathe indeed.

?

Edit: Thanks for all of the feedback so far, updates and clarification following in a reply...

I'm thinking seriously about getting Google out of my life, and trying NextCloud.

Looking to get a personal account through a managed provider.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

How does it compare to ownCloud?

Any hosts I should look at or avoid?

Any apps I should get for it, or avoid?

Any issues I should be aware of before I switch?

Socialists have been hotly anticipating the end of capitalism since at least 1848, when Marx and Engels published The Communist Manifesto - but the Manifesto also reminds us that capitalism is only too happy to reinvent itself during its crises, coming back in new forms, over and over again:

Tipp Nr.30: Achte vor dem Kauf neuer Geräte/Technik unbedingt auf Fallstricke. Diese können sein: App-Zwang, Cloud-Anbindung etc. Nicht jeder »Scheiß« muss mit dem Internet verbunden sein. Wenn die Hersteller dann pleite gehen, sind die Geräte meist nicht mehr zu gebrauchen. Vorausschauendes Einkaufen kann das verhindern.

Prediction: at least 90% of orgs doing "cloud repatriation" (aka "how hard can it be to run some infrastructure, ffs?") are going to get a nasty shock when they re-discover all the reasons that people moved to cloud in the first place: running infrastructure at even modest scale is absolutely not trivial.

Combine that with re-discovering all the basics of hand-offs, on-call, and other DevOps 101 stuff, it's going to a wild fscking ride 🏇

You don't have to accept the arguments of capitalism's defenders to take those arguments seriously. When Adam Smith railed against rentiers and elevated profit to a means of converting the intrinsic selfishness of the wealthy into an engine of production, he had a point:

Hoooooo boy.

"Syncthing is not a backup!" they said. And I just learned why - the hard way.

Apparently, when moving files around, it can happen that it deletes them first and recreates them in their new location later.

I was reorganizing my files on the remote end when the remote disk failed. My local copy was in the process of mirroring the changes and is now incomplete.

Which means the only intact copy of all my files is on the failed disk. Wish me luck.

offers as a service (called Storage Share) with a 1TB of storage for only €5.11/month. That's a really nice price for a privacy-respecting, Europe-based personal .
They also offer a 1TB of just storage for 3.89/month in case you already have an instance of Nextcloud and want to expand its storage capacity.

I get that is a "pull-based" message bus, while is "push-based", but given that I don't understand why SQS exists.

Push seems superior, so why involve a at all?

But fanning out SNS events to SQS is a recommended pattern, why?

What can you do with a poll-based queue that you couldn't do with a push-based ?
