On a recent walk in the Waitākere ranges my friend and I found a female New Zealand giraffe weevil (Lasiorhynchus barbicornis)! The males of this species are even larger in size. We didn't have a banana available for scale 🤣 so a picture of it on my friends hand will have to do.

A long brown weevil on a person's hand. The weevil is approximately two joints long on the person's finger. I would estimate this to be roughly 5 centimetres.

No bunya pine cones on today's walk but did find an old cicada shell clinging on to the side of one of the big old palm trees.

Photo of the same cicada shell resting on the fingers of my open hand in sunlight. Makes the translucent nature of the shell more obvious as well as the little details, like the tiny still intact antennae shapes.
