"Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has signalled he will scrap the nation’s legally binding 2030 climate target and risk #Australia’s membership of the #ParisAgreement, following his vow to deploy nuclear energy to reach net zero by 2050.
He would also pause the rollout of wind and solar farms.
The Albanese government is currently committed to more than double the amount of #RenewableEnergy to 82 % of the grid by 2030 as the key measure to reach its climate target."
"Despite being responsible for more than half of the world’s supply, #Australia captures just 0.5% of the global $57bn #lithium battery market.
The Future Made in Australia policy - which was formally announced in April - seeks to change that, by offering tax breaks and loans to companies seeking to process critical minerals at home."
'What if a common element rather than scarce, expensive ones was a key component in electric car batteries?
A collaboration co-led by an Oregon State University chemistry researcher is hoping to spark a green battery revolution by showing that iron instead of cobalt and nickel can be used as a cathode material in lithium-ion batteries.'
A Vast, Untapped Source of Lithium Has Just Been Found in The US
"#Pennsylvania sits on a vein of sedimentary rock known as the Marcellus Shale, which is rich in natural gas. The geological foundation was deposited almost 400 million years ago by volcanic activity, and it contains #lithium from volcanic ash.
Mackey and his colleagues have now found that when wastewater is dredged up from the deep by #fracking activities, it contains an astonishing amount of lithium."
Remember: fossil fuel companies want people to focus on what uses#energy so we don't talk about the supply side.
They benefit from #environmentalists spending time and energy bickering with one another about whether AI uses too much #electricity, whether to support more #nuclear plants, whether we should mine more #lithium to have grid scale #batteries, and so forth.
That doesn't mean we can't talk about these things, but be #mindful where you spend your energy.
Fires caused by #LithiumIon batteries r on the rise across #Canada, according 2 organization that represents country's fire chiefs, prompting warnings from fire services, injury lawyers & even #HealthCanada.
#Toronto saw a 90% increase in number of fires involving #RechargeableBatteries in 2023 — total of 55 fires, up from 29 the previous year — & the batteries were one of the leading causes of fires in #Vancouver that year.
@brunus
Responders have currently found ‘no immediate threat’, but 14 of at least 56 containers carrying #contaminants were destroyed

"In the meantime, more containers could fall into the water, including ones the NTSB says contain corrosive chemicals and #Lithium-ion batteries – materials that could leak #toxic#HeavyMetals into the water. And as long as the ship remains in the water, the possibility of the ship’s fuel container rupturing remains."
"Experts say a saltwater, or brine, aquifer under the #Smackover Formation may contain enough #lithium to produce batteries for 50 million EVs.
Umberson said this new process, dubbed Direct Lithium Extraction (or #DLE), will benefit south #Arkansas and the lithium industry as a whole because of its high lithium recovery rates and minimal environmental impact.
[But] Umberson and Donnelly say further independent research must be done on DLE and its long-term impacts."
“It’s not green, it’s greed. Global warming is a serious problem and we cannot continue burning #fossilfuels, but destroying mountains for lithium is just as bad as destroying mountains for coal. You can’t blow up a mountain and call it green.”
#Barroso is the only region in #Portugal – and one of only eight in Europe – recognised by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System of outstanding landscapes that combine agricultural biodiversity, resilient ecosystems and a valuable cultural heritage.
"The cathode is not made from the familiar mixture of #lithium and other metals. Instead, the primary ingredient is #zinc, which ranks as the fourth most produced metal in the world.
Eos’s batteries use a #water-based electrolyte (the liquid that moves charge around in a battery) instead of organic solvent."
This is intended to be a #GridBattery.
"The recent price cuts come from a deliberate decision to use abundant earth materials such as iron and phosphorus wherever possible.
These #batteries are cheaper, as they have no #cobalt. They have other benefits too: a longer usable life and less risk of fire than traditional #lithium battery chemistries. The downside is they have lower capacity and voltage."
À chaque fois on pense qu'il a touché le fond, mais on se trompe.
