I'm writing about Meshtastic, a decentralised, peer to peer communication network that uses LoRa radios.
My initial experiences with it are not that positive, but I learnt a lot along the way, and thought it would be useful to share with the world what I found out so far.
There's a bit about frequencies, antennas and all that hamradio stuff.
As always, a huge thanks to all the contributors who helped make this release possible. Your continued support drives Meshtastic forward. 🙌 #lora#meshnetworks#decentralized#opensource
Just getting back into #Meshtastic and WOW. This project has really taken off in the last year. If you're interested in off-grid decentralized encrypted messaging, check it out. No ham license required. Tons of active nodes in the Portland area. You can get started for $16. Chinese new year and sudden popularity is making some parts hard to find.
My new #Meshtastic record — 49 km 😲 From hills around Wells to Cardiff. In general, this area is very busy with Meshtastic nodes so great opportunity to have a casual chat with radio geeks!
Three good things today: 1. #Yoga class has started again after Christmas break 2. Parcel with #meshtastic hardware has arrived 3. Really enjoying the second the second Richard Coles’ Canon Clement Mystery #3GoodThings@3goodthings
Mountain biked up to a local glider port for a #sota activation this morning. Very windy, cold, and the bands sucked. Ride up was steep and I looped out the bike for the first time, ever. Brought a #meshtastic radio which heard distant stations. #amateurradio#bikes
Three good things today: 1. Watched a YouTube video and installed LLMs on #raspberrypi with astonishing ease 2. Going out later to see friends 3. Got #meshtastic working to reach a friend across town #3GoodThings@3goodthings
Three good things today: 1. Meeting went well, other party very accommodating and helpful 2. Managed the treadmill and had a swim before work, second time this week. Woo Hoo 3. Learning more about #meshtastic#3GoodThings@3goodthings
Huhu #37c3-Wesen!
I've decided to get my #AmateurRadio license. I already know most of the fundamentals so with a little study should be able to pass just fine. I think it's an important infrastructure to keep going and expand, especially these days.
I will also continue to expand the #LoRa#Meshtastic network on the North Shore of Boston, with hopes of having it support connection all the way to Boston Proper (we have line of sight spots up here directly to the city and surrounding areas!)
On top of that, I've got the hardware and ability to set up a MassMesh mesh wifi node. The network is small, but a good proof of concept for a higher bandwidth community networking solution independent of the trunk internet.
Any tips or encouragement from anyone appreciated!
A Non-Technical Introduction Video to Meshtastic Off-Grid Radio Communications
This is an open-source solution that works with inexpensive LoRa radios, and your mobile phone or laptop, to be able to pass messages directly, or in shared channels, between the various nodes with no Internet or mobile phone coverage required.
We're making progress on building a #Meshtastic network across PHL! In the past few weeks we've shown it's possible to send messages 5 miles or more across the city via #LoRa nodes in high places. If you work in a tall building, get in touch!
More #Meshtastic testing on Brzanka, Poland. These small 2 dBi antennas work pretty well 600-800 m with nearly line of sight, but inside forest leaves block a lot of signal. With one relay (placed somewhere in the forest on the hill) I get a link to another node placed behind the hill, around 2 km in total.
