It's the last day of #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth and I want to bring some real history to those who don't know the real story on Natives and America...
On this last day of Native American Heritage Month, here are seven Atlas Obscura stories. Read about how wildlife biologist Serra Hoagland is bridging Indigenous traditions and modern methods to manage fire, Autumn Fourkiller's search for Native American Grave Houses in Oklahoma, and Arrow Sample's quest to bring acorns back to Californian cuisine.
What's the most difficult language to learn? Many linguists say it's Navajo, which has unique grammar, syntax and tonal pronunciation, and is so indecipherable to outsiders that it was used as a form of military code in WWII. Big Think's Tim Brinkhof looks at its complexities, why it's fallen into decline, and the efforts to revive the language.

As Native American Heritage Month comes to a close, for our “Hidden Histories” series, we look at the life and legacy of Mary Golda Ross, the first Native American woman to become an engineer and a pioneering figure of the space age.
This extensive article from #Wisconsin shows examples of how improvements in land use can be environmental issues but also legal issues.
When #indigenous people try to use land with long-term goals, barriers arise from states and federal government ignoring treaty rights which protect the environment. Good News: Interactions between gov't and tribes are improving slowly.
...member of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe of NC, leads pro-education Powwow events Fall 2023 at UNC-Charlotte. Part of a native cultural revival in this area.
The Thanksgiving myth surrounding the relationship between Native Americans and settlers partly stems from just a few lines in a letter written by settler Edward Winslow, where he speaks about sharing a feast with the Wampanoag people. CBS News looks at how Perry Ground, a Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation, is trying to help Americans rethink this through storytelling.
The annual Thanksgiving tradition has obscured the historical reality of Native American genocide: dispossession from their lands, efforts to destroy their cultures, and the slaughter of their communities.
It is important to remember this past as we celebrate with our families and bear witness to current struggles against genocide and imperialism. Around the world, Indigenous people are continuing to resist and refuse to be erased.
It's November, which is Native American heritage month - a perfect time for my Indigenous Futurism reading rec list to drop. Shepherd is building a platform to connect readers with writers and books often suppressed by algorithms that love hegemony.

Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks in Ohio is a marvel of Indigenous science and astronomy — its geometric mounds and enclosures helped Native Americans organize cycles of planting and hunting. For centuries, it has been exceptionally badly treated by settlers, used for military barracks, a fairground, and a golf course. This @TheConversationUS story details its history and the efforts to protect it.
I really love this book series ! They are extremely rich picture books, destined as much for children, than for adults. It is a joyful and emotional celebration of the Haida Culture and Community and an invitation to learn about the Sk’ad’a Principles.
It's Native American Heritage Month, so my kids and I are learning about the Iroquois Great Law of Peace.
I love the descriptions of what a leader's character should be like. I would, in fact, prefer to be ruled by people like those described in the Great Law. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth
I think it's time I spoke up about Native American Heritage Month, Palestine, and the vote in 2024. A 🧵...
I feel like #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth in November is an insult to my people. Having it in the same month as the United States as a whole celebrates #Genocide is a disgusting tribute. However, it does give us Natives the advantage to change the narrative and educate those ignorant enough to believe Native and U.S. history....
Native and U.S., that is what is going on in Palestine...
