I've been earwormed by this song a lot and I love the translation of the delightful lyrics, but I'm going to write the title as "Gender Queer" going forward as that is more faithful to the lyrics than the literal title "雌雄同體" (by 五月天/Mayday) and the English translation of that phrase is potentially offensive to intersex people.
What old-school punk rock with a (somewhat longer) topical theme, the waste of time on commercial social media (also why no YouTube link to the video shared by me).
"In a Big Country" is a rousing anthem by Scottish rock band Big Country. Released in 1983 as part of their iconic debut album 'The Crossing', the song's driving guitars and bagpipe-inspired sound evoke images of wide-open landscapes. Its lyrics paint a vivid picture of life in a vast and rugged land.
Steve Albini dead from a heart attack at 61. Too soon.
I still have a visceral memory of Steve at a Big Black gig at (I think) Leeds Poly (UK). Dressed in black Levi's 501s and a white T-shirt -- super bright under the stage lights -- which became splattered with vivid red blood after he cut a finger on a guitar string.
Zubaida Solid of Siena Root has a really commanding stage presence, looking serious and a little mournful. Her voice and vocal range are huge though she herself is a slender young person. She does this thing I've never seen before where she'll hit important notes really loudly off-mike and still be heard by the audience in a small venue, then angle the mike in and blow everybody's minds with the sudden volume spike. This band is live groove magic!
In February 1995, The WaPo described #Albini as a “post-punk barbarian.” By Sept 2023, The Post called him an “era-defining alt-rock producer.”
He was prolific, telling the Free Press Houston in 2018 that he had worked on a “couple thousand” records.
One of those was in the late 1990s w/ #RobertPlant & #JimmyPage, to create their first release of new material since #LedZeppelin broke up in 1980.
He began the article with an image: “I imagine a trench, about four feet wide & five feet deep, maybe sixty yards long, filled with runny, decaying [excrement]. I imagine these people, some of them good friends, some of them barely acquaintances, at one end of this trench. I also imagine a faceless industry lackey at the other end, holding a fountain pen & a contract waiting to be signed.”
Amazing to be able to hear this band in a small venue with a sparse crowd of a hundred. Siena Root should be filling stadiums! Huge star quality all around! #rock
