Any plans to add !bangs in @Mojeek? Bangs was the main reason #DuckDuckGo was my default search engine for so long.
I've kept #Mojeek there for a few weeks, but I keep switching to DDG just for the bangs 😕
I suppose a better solution would be to include bang-like functionality directly in #Firefox because why hit an external website, but not sure if any plugins make it at seamless? 🧩
@Mojeek, something else for that big list of requests: a way to reach your cache. Google just discontinued¹ access to their cache. Cache access is extremely important because #Mojeek search results often lead to exclusive gate-kept websites like Cloudflare. We need a way to reach that content when it appears in search results. This is what stops me from using Mojeek. #Searx instances offer a cache option (though they cheat and just redirect to archive.org).
Long-shot: are there any mojeek syndicates that have a search UI that offers a mirror or cache alternate link?
BTW, your article mentions #Gigablast but i think they’re gone now.
It’s unclear what happened with Google. They said they will stop caching sites but that’s obviously not true because they need the cache inherently for indexation. Which suggests they intend to make it inaccessible to the public. Though if that’s true, then it would be all-or-nothing, not continued access to old caches.
Oh look it works again, thought when it wanted to access #X anonymously it didn't work anymore. Apparently it now works again like on #Twitter and you can distribute its anonym here in the #Fediverse over a #Nitter instance. It's more convenient to avoid the data collection frenzy of this #web recording for your #privacy.
uBlacklist - a browser add-on for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari to block websites and entire domains from search results on Google, Bing, Brave, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, Qwant, Searx, Startpage.com, and more.
What’s everyone’s favorite self-hosted metasearch engine? I was using #SearX, but it’s no longer maintained. Thinking of moving over to #SearXNG? Any reason not to? Not sure why NG split off from SearX other than internal disputes (I think).
So, this surveillance capitalism thing is totally out of hand. Today @protonmail had a great explainer (https://mastodon.social/@protonmail/111165171600485248) on the mind bending evil Google is up to with it's new "privacy features". But pretty much every tech company is now in the business of profiling you and monetizing your tidbits.
What can you do? A lot as it turns out, but if you just want ONE EASY THING that you can do today, SWITCH TO FIREFOX (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/) and make DuckDuckGo your default search engine.
Searx [1] is #AGPLv3, privacy oriented, you can install it locally (I haven't tried) or you can use any instance from the recommended list [2] or find any other #Searx instance that you trust sufficiently. Some Fediverse instance sysadmins might be willing to run their own searx instance, e.g. searx.glammr.us, searx.newsie.social. Or even searx.mastodon.social.
And again just now, #duckduckgo injects irrelevant pages into search results based on my IP location.
I'm not sure what this signifies — is it an error? A sign that DDG tracks my IP for other purposes? — but it's one more incentive to start using #searx instead.
Ich nutze meist #StartPage, manchmal #DuckDuckGo und gerne auch — wir sind ja hier im #Fediverse 🙂 — eine der zahlreichen #searx-Instanzen. Personalisierung brauche und will ich nicht.
@calculsoberic@louis VPN, Encrypted emailservices like #Protonmail and #Tutanota, encrypted messengers like #Threema and #Signal , alternative search engines like #searx.org and #duckduckgo. Using privacy oriented browsers like #Brave and hardened #Firefox like #LibreWolf and so on. There's a lot you can do to withold your personal data. Don't ever believe it's useless or a ran course. There are always things you can do to give away as less info as possible. Don't give in!
@zeh@alcinnz
>have been seeing the worse results from duckduckgo
We're not the only ones who have been complaining about this recently. I was very happy with DDG for years and I still really like the fact that I can search the Free Software Directory by adding !fsd to my keywords. But their general search results have gone massively downhill in the last year or two, and I blame Bing.
@zeh@alcinnz I've been experimenting with a few search engines recently, including Mojeek, Metager.org, SearchMySite.net and the Searx instances at Monocles.de.
I've also figured out to how to configure my Firefox-based mobile browser to search for videos directly on YewTube (Invidio.us instance), and for green tech info on Appropedia.org, and I plan to add more sites to this (eg search.joinpeertube.org).
#Gigablast ← does their own crawling, but what happened?.. they were dissolved last year & seem to now be www.alltheinternet.com
#Ombrelo ← a proxy but more advanced than the others (filters/downranks Cloudflare sites)
#YaCy is notable because it’s a crawler that you can install and operate yourself. YaCy instances can be public-facing and they can also share indexes with each other fedi style apparently. Some Searx instances tap YaCy instances.
I would love to find a searx or 4get instance that rejects the tech giants, but aggregates from YaCy, mojeek, gigablast, metager, maginalia.nu, frogfind.com, & wiby.me.
And I would love it even more if it would make replacements:
Is it just me or is web search getting dumber? I just tried to search for a report using DuckDuckGo, with the author's name and the full title as keywords. Instead of the text of the report, ideally from the original publisher, I got a bunch of vaguely related tech press articles. DDG are basically a front-end for Bing now, so I guess they're to blame. But I tried Monocles.de (Searx instance) and the results were only marginally better.
