太在線?(Too online?)

Being online is a big part of our life. The average person is spending hours on social media each day, even more actively online, even more staring at screens.

While there are all kinds of smart think-pieces, essays, and books about the societal consequences of this, I think that when it comes to our own life, art is the more powerful way to engage with these issues. Like this installation at Pier 2 in Kaohsiung (高雄市) - a wonderful area to stroll around!

It's a nice piece to remind us of our smartphone use (as if that was necessary!), but its strength lies in allowing us to address it ironically, in a fun way, "performative" if you want so. There is a clear invitation to sit down next to the lady on the left, to interact with her (and be it by ignoring her), to take a picture of doing that. And thus, on another level, the art piece about using smartphones creates a reason to stop using them, to think while using them (of course to use them to capture all that!), and again to talk about it.

What fun!

Myth: The ™ Is Decentralised™

I run my own instance just for myself. An instance of one. What does that mean on today’s fediverse?

It means I’m on mastodon.social.

What?

That makes no sense!

Let me explain:

Since I have my own instance, surely I decide who I follow and anyone can follow me, right?

Wrong.

For ~1M accounts, Eugen decides. If he blocks my instance, a large number of people who follow me today will no longer be able to.

So I may as well be on his server.

@aral @stevelord I speak from experience. I write about America's proxy war in (and and and a few others). I also write about the bigotry of American politics. One of my posts on Ukraine was deleted arbitrarily. Having learned my lesson, I posted another one about American bigotry which was also deleted. I was prepared and appealed with evidence and documentation. The owner of this instance reinstated my post but has since blocked me.

The older songs don’t have the current singer and are not so much my cup of tea, this song was on the new EP, the first with the current singer.

Happy May 35! Today in history, nothing at all happened, especially not in 1989. Certainly nothing worth mentioning. Today is just a day we don’t talk about, for no particular reason. Just go about your business, do not engage in historical nihilism by discussing things that happened in history. Engage in historical positivism by positing how great history has been since your rulers took power

Lots of discussions on end up in predictions of a "Korean scenario", implying division of Ukraine into two parts, one independent and one controlled by like South and North . This is mostly voiced by "realists" both in Russia and the West.

However, there's a catch: in Korea, the communist invasion army supported by USSR and People's Republic of China captured almost all territory of Korea! At the peak of communist invasion, only a small part of Korean peninsula was left under control of Republic of Korea, at the peak of ROK & Allies counteroffensive only a narrow strip at the North was controlled by the communists. In 1953 they were ultimately pushed back to 38th parallel but in the process Seoul changed hands five times, and the net territorial gain for North Korea was none. So the "Korean model" doesn't really sound well for the supporters of Russia, as it implies freezing the conflict at the 23 February 2022 border, which means nullifying all territorial gains except for Crimea and parts of Donbass.

A fun part which you can use to poke Russian vatniks today: in 1950 boycotted UN to protest its recognition of as . How come? Well, UN recognized it as Republic of China (ROC, 1912-1949) as opposed to People's Republic of China (PRC)...
