Dungeons and Dragons folk: The Beyond Printing extension for Chromium based browsers seems to do a pretty solid job backing up your content if you're worried about / shenanigans.

I've not reviewed the code, but so far so good.

Tales of the Valiant impressions time!

what they promised broadly: an updated and more freely licensed game based very closely on D&D5e.

what we got broadly: pretty much that. and it's plenty good enough to switch to from 5e, even if it could have been better.

there's a lot of good and bad, gonna thread some thoughts

chaosfae,
@chaosfae@dice.camp avatar

one thing i wasn't happy with from the original announcement onward was the communication. they did a pretty good job hooking people in, but frequently their communications suggested they would be much more transparent then they actually were. there were a lot of promises of compatibility, balance fixes, confusing rule adjustments, etc, that were given in vague terms that suggested much more than we actually got.

examples:

chaosfae,
@chaosfae@dice.camp avatar

compatibility: they frequently used terms like "fully compatible" with 5e. now obviously if they're making changes at all to anything except specific content, it can't be 100%. but personally my expectation would be that player options would be directly compatible. other parts of compatibility are generally less important because they are easy to adjust on the fly, but player options need balancing and are difficult to make well.

well...

chaosfae,
@chaosfae@dice.camp avatar

...well, they decided to replace races, how you get build up stats, and subclass levels.

mostly you can slot in 5e options directly, but differing subclass levels and feature interaction make porting subclasses feel very iffy if you don't have a strong grasp on editing mechanical rules safely. mostly, there isn't a simple nice set of instructions you can follow for using 5e options with a ToV based. you have to do a bit of leg work.

chaosfae,
@chaosfae@dice.camp avatar

now, i agree the varying subclass feature levels were kinda trash, but i'm really unsure if fixing that was worth losing the ease of compatibility.

however, the biggest problem i had was that they really just didn't communicate what level of compatibility breaks they were willing to make.

another example of something they said they were doing was giving martials a buff. this is an area where they did make some positive changes, but...

chaosfae,
@chaosfae@dice.camp avatar

...but they really could have done a lot more. it really felt like most of the changes were much more horizontal than actual buffs. monk got a little extra juice at the earliest levels. ranger probably got the best of the changes. fighter was very horizontal. all three of them had changes which already broke any potential feature compat things, but they didn't get the buffs they really needed. step of the wind is still resource locked when very reasonably could be free...

There's often a difference between the books that we like, and the books that influence us.

What books have had the largest influence on your gaming?

@SJohnRoss@dice.camp avatar

@Crowstone Heroic Worlds, by Lawrence Schick, has almost certainly been the single most influential book on me as a roleplayer ... but it's a book about RPGs rather than an RPG book, per se.

Among those: AADA Road Atlas and Survival Guide Volume 1: The East Coast, by John Nowak. Still influences me almost every day.

@Tim_Eagon @dragoncrown I’ll admit character generation for fantasy does little for me… but superhero generation is a different story. If a superhero game doesn’t let me have fun creating a dozen or so characters for everyone I “play” - then it’s not a good superhero game.
