"The Tragedy of the Commons" was written by a eugenicist and was effectively debunked as ahistorical fantasy decades ago. More propaganda in the service of privatizing public space and resources. Pass it on. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/voices/the-tragedy-of-the-tragedy-of-the-commons/

"As Susan Cox pointed out, early pastures were well regulated by local institutions. They were not free-for-all grazing sites ...
Many global commons have been similarly sustained through community institutions. This striking finding was the life’s work of Elinor Ostrom, who ...showed the diversity of institutions humans have created to manage our shared environment... humans can deplete finite resources. This often happens when we lack appropriate institutions to manage them."

"It can’t be that dozens of judges got it wrong,” the judge told him, referring to the other judges who rejected the numerous legal challenges after the 2020 election brought by Trump and his Republican cronies. “If you believe in the system, if you believe in democracy, you take the good with the bad.”

@popsci Indeed, someone should tell them about, eg, creative commons licenses and the idea that content producers own copyright unless they sign it away.

Every day corporation do something worse and worse and they wind up paying less and less in fines

You want fines? Start at 100% of what they gained from their misdeeds

And if corporations are people then punish them like people. Corporate death penalty (judicial dissolution) for the worst offenders

When the punishment for a crime is a fine then the laws only apply to the poor.

🇺🇸

Andii,
@Andii@mas.to avatar

@flexghost the concept of 'paying their debt to society' should apply.

@seachanger That'd be a help, tbh, if it happens again. Though for novelty value it's been an interesting thing to happen.

Cory Doctorow on the money again: "The problem with, say, Meta, is only partially that Mark Zuckerberg is personally monumentally unsuited to serving as the unelected, unaccountable permanent social media czar for three billion people. The real problem is that no one should have that job. That job shouldn’t exist. We don’t need to find a better Mark Zuckerberg. We need to abolish Mark Zuckerberg."

Every weekend in the press at the moment I seem to find one or other prominent and/or political commentator, claiming that:

[policy x] is not working, but that's because [policy x] hasn't been implemented in the way it should... it must be done as I intended.

From , to , from to , somehow those who were instrumental in imposing the 'solutions' on us, think they can escape blame by claiming 'its not being done properly'!

A CEO saw one of their employees dumpster diving in the dark, buys them a lamp to see by. Another CEO sees their employee doing likewise, and says to themself, "I'm obviously paying my employess too little" and both feeds the employee and asks them what a wage would be that would enable them to live with dignity. They then return to their office and raise the wage levels of all their employees to living levels.
Which of those CEO's was a good neighbour to the dumpster divers?

It still takes a while before Meta(P92) joins the Fediverse and the recent times we have read a lot of things from both sides

Polls are not super reliable but maybe it will give a better overall picture of what you, the people using these platforms want

The result will not be the definite outcome for us but I do take it into heavy consider because I love you all very much!

"Would YOU want to federate with Meta's new platform?"

Andii,
@Andii@mas.to avatar

@stux The 'no' could change to 'yes but...' if there was a strong legal way to make sure that Meta wouldn't be scraping our data or making money from users outside of Meta.

"The most tantalizing feature of the ancient Indus Valley remains is what they appear to lack: any trace of a ruling class or managerial elite. ... here was a stable, prosperous civilization that appeared to remain that way for centuries without a state, without priest-kings or merchant oligarchs, and without a rigid caste system or warrior class. How did they manage it?"
