I asked my small biz customers to pay by check or e-check and many actually have! I have to invoice them separately so it’s tedious but the real ones are down. well, the real ones plus the lady from Texas who told me she was happy to start getting in the habit of paying for things by check due to the 15 minute city people eventually using credit cards to shut down commerce from longer distances 🤗
My kid and their girlfriend moved in together. Movers overcharged by $500.00. Girlfriend called, left a message and didn’t hear back. She said she didn’t want to be “mean.” This morning, it was my kid’s turn. They left a polite and precise message at 8am explaining that the behavior of the company would force them to file a complaint with the AG’s office, BBB, their rep and they would stop payment on their credit card. They got a message within 30 minutes and refunded the $500.00. BE “MEAN."
@ramiro my wife is Iphone and I-Pad. I’m IPad and android phone, which is currently a pixel 5. Both companies have plenty of issues with how they work and what they do.
To stay connected I work with I can afford that does the job.
"Axe the Tax" is a political proposal.
Fair enough.
But it isn't about making life more affordable.
It's spin to conceal a "let the planet burn" climate policy."
Learned a bit of Fortran and a chunk of BASIC in high school (because I’m that old), and did some quick, word-based games in the latter.
More recently dipped a toe into Python when my tween was into it re: Robotics club at school. Even with basically an introduction to it, I appreciated its compact, efficient formatting.
Then I heard that Rust is more efficient and runs faster than Python? My curiosity got the better of me and I grabbed this.
@reay It was so much better when we replaced keypunch cards with optical cards. They still went to the mainframe and we waited 3 days to find out if you made in errors.
In 1975ish high school.
The dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) seem to like to hang out under or near my shed. There is a feeder with a block of seed hanging overhead near this bird. I do sometimes see them on the feeders or in the trees, but mostly they like it on the ground and in the grass.
"Dark-eyed Juncos are neat, even flashy little sparrows that flit about forest floors of the western mountains and Canada, then flood the rest of North America for winter. They’re easy to recognize by their crisp (though extremely variable) markings and the bright white tail feathers they habitually flash in flight. Dark-eyed Juncos are among the most abundant forest birds of North America. Look for them on woodland walks as well as in flocks at your feeders or on the ground beneath them." - allaboutbirds.org
This December, if there’s one tech New Year’s resolution I’d encourage you to have, it’s switching to the only remaining ethical web browser, Firefox. According to recent posts on social media, Firefox’s market share is slipping. We should not let that happen. There are two main reasons why switching is important.
Firefox is the only major browser not built by a company that makes money from advertising and/or selling your personal data. There’s been a lot of talk about websites tracking users using cookies, fingerprinting and other nefarious technologies that hurt your privacy. But owning the browser puts Google, Apple and Microsoft in a position where they don’t even need those tricks. We need to use browsers that are independent, and right now that means Firefox.
Browser engine monopoly
Wikipedia lists four browser engines as being “active”. Browser engines are the bits that take a web page’s code and display it on your screen. Ideally, they conform to the official W3C standards, and display all elements as it describes. If that’s the case, web developers can easily write sites that work on all browsers. No proprietary vendor lock-in nonsense, just glorious open standards at work.
It’s happened before
In the early 2000’s, Internet Explorer had a massive 95% market share. This meant that many sites were only developed for use with IE. They’d use experimental features that IE supported, in favor of things from the official HTML standard. This was a very bad situation, which hindered the development of the World Wide Web.
Currenty, Chrome, Safari and Edge all use variations of the closely related Webkit and Blink engines. If we want to avoid another browser engine monopoly, we need to support Firefox, and its “Gecko” engine.
Firefox is actually really good
If Firefox would be a bad browser, I would not recommend you to switch. It’s fast, has a nice user interface, and feels every bit as modern and elegant as its competition. I’ve been using it as my main browser for a couple of years now, on Linux, Windows, MacOS and Android. As a web developer, I usually have at least three browsers open, but when I go look something up on the web, I pick Firefox.
This is a tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor), these little birds don't spend much time at the feeder, they fly in, grab what they want and escape to a nearby tree - all within a few seconds.
"Tufted Titmice hoard food in fall and winter, a behavior they share with many of their relatives, including the chickadees and tits. Titmice take advantage of a bird feeder’s bounty by storing many of the seeds they get. Usually, the storage sites are within 130 feet of the feeder. The birds take only one seed per trip and usually shell the seeds before hiding them." - allaboutbirds.org
@violetmadder@swordplay@passenger@LALegault I lived 60 miles from Detroit. Mom listened to talk radio. Dad listened to country and news.
In 1972 my dad bought a AM/FM stereo record and 8 track player.
I found WRIF which introduced me to what is now old classic rock.
Back then it was Floyd, Stones, Aerosmith, Steppenwolf, etc.
I have a lot wider range of what I'll listen to now, but I can still tell a lot of old rockers within a few notes.
WaPo workers are striking on Thursday. They're asking that we show solidarity and respect their digital picket line by not engaging with any Washington Post content on Dec 7. #labor#media
@JoshuaHolland
I'm not a WaPo person, and when I try to read articles from here they are firewalled so no biggy.
I am curious on why are they walking out
