E-BIKE owners!! Did you know?

Let your batteries warm up for a while before charging them. Charging a lithium ion battery when it's close to or below freezing will damage it, permanently reducing its capacity.

This is why: https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/263036/why-charging-li-ion-batteries-in-cold-temperatures-would-harm-them

HOT TIP:
Best to charge between 10 to 27 C (50 to 80 F), never below freezing.

CathyTuttle,
@CathyTuttle@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@jyasskin Why aren't E-bike batteries better designed? It's likely a question of money. More complex batteries are more expensive.

In 2011, the Obama admin gave $1.5 Billion to U.S.-based manufacturers to produce highly efficient batteries for EV cars.

Tens of billions more was invested in building the EV car industry worldwide + rebates for purchases.

In contrast, Colorado ran THE most extensive E-bike rebate program in the US. The $9 Million fund it offered in August 2023 is basically out.

Absolutely! Secure, at-grade Ebike (and ALL bike) parking is a huge reason people in apartments can't own bikes. Secure bike parking in apartments is even a big issue in the Netherlands where I live, and one of the reasons is quite popular. https://swapfiets.nl/en-NL

People of Mastodon!

I'm researching the growth of ebikes ...

... in cities around the US

I've talked to many people who love them!

But also want to include the perspective of folks who have concerns ...

... i.e. about the speed and weight of ebikes in accidents with pedestrians or other cyclists, and the like

If anyone has thoughts they wanna share, ping me! I'm all ears: clive@clivethompson.net

Pass this along if you know anyone else with perspective they want to share

CathyTuttle,
@CathyTuttle@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@clive If you are writing about ebikes I'm sure you know that #ebikes outsell non-ebikes in The Netherlands. In 2022, 486,000 of 855,000 new bikes sold were electric: hundreds of thousands of cargo delivery bikes, family bikes, and everyday get-around-the-city bikes.

If ebikes make sense to people using flat, safe #Netherlands roads, surely they make even more sense to use on the hilly, car-clogged streets in the rest of the world.

In 2021, 75% of the 7300 people who were killed walking in US were hit at night. Walking at night is safer in other countries. Why is the US an outlier?

*we allow stupid big new cars w blinding headlights + dashboard screens

  • we tolerate texting + distracted drivers
    *US has bad or no sidewalks / xwalks
    *and the poorest people who can’t afford cars have been pushed out of downtowns and into suburbs where they must walk on roads built only for 🚘 🚘

John Simmerman and I sat down for a chat on how Dutch street infrastructure reflects values.

Premieres 11amPST 8pmCET on 10 April. Podcast also drops Wednesday.

My thesis is that values of commonsense, punctuality, consensus, adaptation, sharing, self-reliance, and looking for bargains are actually built into the Dutch streets.

What values are reflected where you live?

Such big differences.
Two exhibit halls next to each other.
This year's Amsterdam @cargobikefest was held in the same venue, at the same time, as the car trade show, Fully Charged LIVE.

The E-car hall was quiet, corporate, well-funded.
The hall was full of human noise, energy & ideas, cobbled together with imagination.

As much as governments continue to pour money into the industry, it feels like the people have other ideas.

Fun fact, the canal in my video below was a 12-lane freeway until 2002. Change is good.

Seattle is completed today!

+Seattle's Burke GIlman Trail to connect Puget Sound to Lake WA was built in late 1970s

+Since the early 90s people who bike have advocated to complete the "Missing Link" over seldom-used rail tracks that frequently caused bad crashes

+Early in 2023 Washington Bike Law filed a successful class action lawsuit of behalf of 10 people injured recently while biking on the Missing Link

Map from that shows the location of The Missing Link. TBH this trail is very 1990s infrastructure and FAR too narrow for the amount of walker, biker, stroller, dog walker, runner, skater, wheelchair traffic it carries daily. But today we are celebrating.
X statement from Seattle Department of Transportation today that shows a little scrap of bike lane and the words, "We are open for business". The construction took a few days, the advocacy a few decades. Let's do better next time!

It's fascinating how most people perceive "make it possible for people to choose to ride a bike, take public transit, or even walk places" as "".

People are so threatened by anyone having the opportunity to opt out of driving that they see it as an existential threat to driving altogether, maybe as something that should be banned?

Equally threatening is the idea that other forms of transportation should get anywhere near the same subsidies as driving

CathyTuttle,
@CathyTuttle@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@enobacon @sanae @dx @footsteps The Dutch policy is only to build what can be maintained. Projects clearly enumerate a long term maintenance budget and space requirements as part of their start up. Roads have value. Public spaces have value. The government has to justify how it's going to take care of what they build, not just build it. Turns out a lot of what is cheapest to maintain doesn't include moving and storing cars for free.

Sad news. The city that never sleeps just went off the road. was all ready to start on June 30. NY Governor Kathy Hochul just slammed on the brakes.

Getting here was a massive advocacy and legislative effort. was going to be the first major city in the to control . It took years to plan, had to get federal approval, and cost millions to build the system. The machines and signs are installed, ready to go.

10 miles into the 600-mile drive to visit my sister for Christmas, my car's transmission* went belly up. Fortunately we had a plan B and were still able to celebrate the holidays with family, but the spectre of having to pay for a new transmission loomed. Having to buy a whole new car would have been terrifying indeed.

Cars are prohibitively expensive. It's stupid how much we've forced ourselves to depend on them.

It's so relaxing to bike in the , because, on busy roads, bike traffic is separated, and on city streets I can trust that people who drive are alert and follow the rules (look up presumed liability).

In the US, I wonder if I should make a version of this video for myself in the cities I bike in.

I love getting places by : the air, the beauty, using my body to move, interesting things all around me.
