Great Big Bollards: A Manifesto

A modest proposal for keeping people outside of #cars alive by Dan Marshall @streetsmn

"I’d start with installing Great Big #Bollards at all bus shelters. The fact that we don’t protect #transit shelters tells us everything we need to know about modern American morality... Streetlights, signs and stoplights are all built w breakaway bolts to protect drivers and minimize vehicle damage when hit"

Anna Zivarts is a non-driver, creative activist, brilliant thinker. Great discussion!

WHO'S A NON-DRIVER?
At least 30% of us. People too young, too old, , or too poor to drive

WHAT TO DO?

I've been biking them for 2 years and just learned a new word -- and a new program. H/T @modacitylife

Doorfietsroutes, thru bike paths, are smoothly aligned regional connectors between cities. Fun for tourists. Essential for adaptation.

Regional requires incredibly hard political and engineering cooperation.

Province already has 150km (93m) of a planned 1500km system. built 146km just in 2023.

What kinds of roads we choose to build (and for whom we build them) is relevant to creating a future we can thrive in.

Back in the , Metro planner Robert Spurlock calculated a complete linked 1,000 MILE network of low-impact regional walk/bike trails would cost $500M. That's half the cost of expanding a mile of I-5 freeway. Admittedly that's just for 3-meter ribbons of asphalt, not beautiful Dutch fietspad with complex crossings and community input.

But we have to make choices now.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@CathyTuttle I'm reminded of how apparently when the Chinese road network deteriorated due to imperial collapse, narrow paved trails that took far less resources to maintain were able to keep civilization running. This worked in part because of Chinese wheelbarrow designs: https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/2011/12/how-to-downsize-a-transport-network-the-chinese-wheelbarrow/

And later those narrow paths were used by bicycles!

In #Utrecht I live in a dense neighborhood in an apartment building, surrounded by other apartment buildings. It is always quiet because most everyone travels by #bike

Being outside, hearing #birds, kids, people, seeing my neighbors while walking and biking makes me calmer and happier. My blood pressure is getting lower.

John Simmerman and I sat down for a chat on how Dutch street infrastructure reflects values.

Premieres 11amPST 8pmCET on 10 April. Podcast also drops Wednesday.

My thesis is that values of commonsense, punctuality, consensus, adaptation, sharing, self-reliance, and looking for bargains are actually built into the Dutch streets.

What values are reflected where you live?

Women are constrained in their use of public space, especially women who bike.

We need to stop tolerating aggressive behavior from people who drive against people who bike.

@CathyTuttle @londoncycling @bikeloudpdx I strongly disagree with the idea that it’s women who need to talk about this. It’s a man problem. Men need to step up to stop their fellow men’s bigoted behavior. Everyone who can do so without severe personal risk should be prepared to intervene when they witness egregious incidents, but only men are welcome in the spaces where this behavior gets propagated and normalized. They must rebel against it.

3.7% of 's population lives in an

LTNs use signs, planters, bollards, cameras to reduce cut-thru

Most people who live in an LTN don't know it

Emergency responder time stayed the same

58% less , 50% fewer collisions, cleaner
