For my mutuals… who can identify this grand and amazing room? Whose infamous mansion is it from? And what can it mean? [a clue to this puzzle in my bio]

@Jessicascott09 think horror and puzzles, a curious and foreboding mansion with a nefarious host bent on evil… all will be revealed on June 1st.

@joshadell Keep your eyes open for an announcement in early June. And ya know, remastered T7G is even on Switch now.

I wrote a thing about for a local newsletter with a few thousand subscribers. So I kept it as non-technical as possible for that audience. I should say, after 35 years in the technology sector, I am a tech journalist/writer - not an AI scientist or programmer. Companies have hired me in the past to ‘explain’ complex tech, so let me know if I got this right. There’s a second, more technical post coming that explores the evolution of AI through neural networks to machine learning & intelligence. Hey, it’s the topic of the day, how could I not write about it? That’s kinda what I do. 1/2

2/2 in my second post/essay on I’ve taken a quick look at the history and evolution of , dropped some names, and dived a little deeper in artificial neural networks (not as deep as transformers yet, that will come later). Again, the caveat hers is that I’m a tech writer/communicator - not a data scientist, programmer or network manager, so cut me some slack. This essay was written for my curious, non-techie but smart friends who seem to appreciate my efforts to break it down for them. There are far more detailed and technical pieces out there, but most would be beyond the average reader. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NUZxWypcNJSkXLVP8MEdw0oFfuPOiFDDYatiMGeo2lA/edit

@Woodhouse3D We have a benchmark for that… the ‘massive multitasking language understanding’ (MMLU) measure/scale. Competent humans generally score @ 89% on that, and properly prompted, GPT-4 has gotten pretty darn close, in the low 80’s recently.

Elon Musk Concedes Humiliating Defeat - He got it wrong, way wrong. But will a new CEO who his core users already hate save the sinking birdsite? Personally, I don’t think so. My best scenario is that gets so frustrated with the platform and politics in general he decides to stick to innovation, space and EVs. If he is to survive his own hubris, that’s where he belongs. But narcissists rarely might the correct choice. https://www.thestreet.com/social-media/elon-musk-concedes-humiliating-defeat

@ppb1701 I can totally see that. Good call. And if she somehow succeeds, he’ll pat himself on the back for being it being such a genius hire. Sigh…

No matter how many times an enthusiastic tech bro tells me that widespread AI use will be a positive for humanity, all I can hear is "capitalism go brrrr, income inequality go brrrr, structural inequities go brrr". It's strange how this happens every time. Must be something wrong with my hearing.

CharlieMcHenry,
@CharlieMcHenry@connectop.us avatar

@scarlet This is exactly why immediate discussions around a minimum basic income are not just relevant, but required - sooner rather than later. Have you read “Manna”, the delightful and engaging sci-fi short story written 20 years ago about the two potential future scenarios AI poses? It takes about an hour and a half to read and is well worth the time and effort IMO. Breaks it down starkly. https://marshallbrain.com/manna1

Two great groups jam at my favorite festival held annually on Nova Scotia’s beautiful - best venues, best music, best locals, best drives and a great after show bash at the Gaelic College nightly. All the greats have played there, but the locals often steal the show. The Rankin Family, the Beaton Sisters, the McGillivrays, the MacIssacs, the Barra-McNeils, the list of local notables goes on-and-on. https://youtube.com/watch?v=7npkGfFhO3o&feature=share

In today's world, catchy headlines and articles often distract readers from the actual facts and relevant information. [As an aside, it is interesting to me how people are using AI to generate side-gigs and new small business offerings, this is just one of many such efforts leveraging AI for new products] https://www.boringreport.org/

Ex-correctional officer charged with sexually abusing 3 inmates in California federal prison cells - and he’s just the tip of the iceberg. Even the prison chaplain at this facility has plead guilty to abuse - in the prison CHAPEL. I was taught the three guiding principals of the justice system are: retribution, deterrence and rehabilitation. We send convicts to prison as retribution for their crimes, to deter them and others from committing the same crimes, and importantly, to rehabilitate the offenders so they can successfully re-enter society as productive and safe citizens. Abusing inmates for personal sexual gratification is NOT on that list. https://apnews.com/95b4ab563c1983c77a65a743e534968a
