High salaries in tech are over forever and tech workers are freaking out. Layoffs, downsizing and recession fears are creating a climate where salary reductions are easy to justify. So in the recent poll cited in this article, 51% of the 14k respondents said they thought the days of ultra high salaries are over forever. Sounds about right to me. Industrial sectors, and tech is such a sector, have lifecycles - they progress through stages that is to say. The endless VC $$ and high salary stage is now behind us. And that’s very likely where it belongs. https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-workers-freak-out-blind-end-of-high-salaries-pay-2023-4

The problem with “…faking authenticity” and how fell into the trap of letting their audience shape the tone and content of their news coverage. A mistake that has already cost them almost $800 million with more lawsuits to come. Rupert Murdoch and his family have been a dangerous influence in every country where they’ve owned media outlets; including Australia, the UK and the USA. Their ‘cater to the populist crazies’ at the expense of facts and the truth approach has sullied proper professional journalism, divided three countries, sowed division and hatred, all while making tons of profit and laughing all the way to the bank. Disgusting and reprehensible. https://theconversation.com/tucker-carlsons-departure-and-fox-news-expensive-legal-woes-show-the-problem-with-faking-authenticity-203649

Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says - Inside Apple, this report suggests that “Siri remains widely derided” by employees. At one point, the team working on Apple’s Reality Pro headset reportedly became so frustrated with Siri that it considered “building alternative methods” for controlling the headset with voice technology. Surprised? I didn’t think so. I’m a hybrid computer user, with a PC on my desk and Apple smartphone and iPad. I’ve only used a couple of times in over a decade and been disappointed both times. https://9to5mac.com/2023/04/27/apple-employees-siri-struggles/

China may have to bail out one of its poorest provinces - And more provinces may follow. “China's local governments are struggling with trillions of dollars of debt, after three years of strict pandemic controls and a real estate crash drained their coffers. Some cities have already slashed medical benefits to seniors, sparking protests, and other vital services are at risk.” Global economic planners need to factor the possibility of a massive default into their global outlook predictions. If the USA slips into recession, as widely predicted, and then China defaults the risk of global contagion and international recession increases exponentially. https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/27/economy/china-guizhou-province-debt-crisis-bailout-intl-hnk/index.html

Yum. Found some Morels under our Madrone trees. It’s that time of year. Normally we head to the nearby Cascades for wildcrafting and foraging. It’s great when some of our favorite shrooms pop up on our own property.

Imma one sport guy, and that one sport is (soccer for those in the USA) - ‘the beautiful game’. It’s REAL sport, no TV time-outs, cheerleaders or created drama. The drama plays out on the pitch and only stops for injury, substitutions, or when the ball goes into touch (out of bounds). And though I watch a couple of leagues, the is my first choice, and English football in general is what I enjoy following. After all, the Brits invented the game. A big part of the attraction for me, aside from the stunning play of top teams, is the promotion-relegation process that providers a pathway for teams to be promoted into higher leagues for finishing at the top of their existing leagues. The converse is also true, as bottom-finishing teams are relegated to lower leagues. It’s very fair & democratic - and gives fans at all levels something to follow. So it’s only natural that I’m totally delighted with the promotion of this season, after 15 yr wait. What a story.
