@Chimneyswift@aleph.land

Gen X cancer survivor. I see you through the cosmos.

Too weird for the nerds, too nerdy for the weirdos, and nowhere near cool enough to be punk. Bearing witness to the incipient doom of the anthropocene from deep in the belly of the capitalist food supply chain.

Nature lover, birder, cyclist. Buddhist/Dzogchen practitioner, but in an anarchistic kind of way. Very anti-racist, anti-sexist and anti-fascist. Patron of the arts, high and low.

If it bothers you when people talk about systemic problems, you're probably habitually numbing yourself to avoid seeing the ways that your life is built upon and contributes to those problems.

Seattle now, with roots in Colorado, Minnesota and Ohio -- but yeah I love this whole messed up world.

CW: radical politics, normie politics, occasional creative words, also some NBA, soccer

Thought for the day:

Billionaires are a symptom of poverty.

(Paraphrasing Iain Banks on money, but more specific to our times because we still need some way to allocate scarce resources, just: not like that.)

Chimneyswift,
@Chimneyswift@aleph.land avatar

@graydon @haihappen @cstross @TessRants One note here about agricultural collapse: From farms to grocery stores and restaurants, there are tens of thousands of people working very hard to get crops to people at a fair price. This is a complicated and ongoing process. It is literally what I do for a living. Re: anthropogenic climate change, what we will see first is the seasonality and extreme high prices of select commodities such as berries and lettuces that we take for granted as year-round easy to get items. There have already been moments of this, but just briefly so that most people haven't noticed. If we get several extreme heat and dry seasons in a row, however, we could start to see real shortages. Assuming the current climate change models are correct, this is a question of when, not if. There are greenhouses, there are workarounds, so mostly it will be a matter of cost. And it's messy - high food prices incentivize unfair labor practices, right? We're headed into a crunch, with no plan B possible.

Chimneyswift,
@Chimneyswift@aleph.land avatar

@TessRants @graydon @haihappen @cstross Legit. And anyone can get good at growing mushrooms. Closet, basement, spare room, on a shelf, whatever. Psychedelics get all the hype, but having abundant criminis or white button mushrooms in a protein-scarce environment could be very, very helpful 😉

    Okay, one more contribution for #SuperbOwlSunday. This is a Strix nebulosa, a #SuperbOwl I saw in Grand Teton National Park, a few years back. Great grey owls are one of the most amazing creatures. Their ability to hover, hear prey under lots of snow, and dive up to a foot into the snow to catch prey is amazing!

    Good morning. 🔀☕🐥

    28 January 2024

    When I was a kid, I used to call the Leaning Tower of Pisa: The Leaning Tower of Pizza. I know I'm not the only one. My wife and I went there once and I probably have some old photos somewhere, but they are 35mm and I'd have to scan them to make them digital, but first I'd have to find them. I do have a miniature Leaning Tower that we bought as a souvenir. It sits on the top shelf of my desk, and glancing at it started this train of thought. That was a long time ago. I don't know if we really realized at the time that we were creating memories that would be with us the rest of our lives.

    "I've never tried to block out the memories of the past, even though some are painful. I don't understand people who hide from their past. Everything you live through helps to make you the person you are now.” - Sophia Loren

    They hate moisture. They cover it with sand. This makes most feeder designs ... ooze more moisture, they bring more sand... then the feeder is empty, ants have no water: a crisis. I've tried lecturing them, showing them educational films... but mostly NINE different feeder designs. they defeat them all.

    I think the most absolutely horrifying thing about middle age is how banal your fixations become. Instead of desperately reaching for novel and risky conceptual spaces, you're left increasingly coming back to really boring problems that everyone deals with. And no one wants to hear about your meandering thoughts on feedbacking negativity or being a good friend or keeping a sex life alive or the intricacies of power dynamics around aging in a young subculture because that's all endlessly tread.

    What COVID19 has taught us about the Zombie Apocalypse is that there will be zombie denialists, zombie virus infection parties, zombie conspiracy theorists, and politicians ruthlessly exploiting lies about zombies to kill off demographics who won't vote for them—and when a vaccine against Z-virus is invented there will be zombie anti-vaxxers (some of them funded by the Kremlin for shits and giggles).
