Google CEO Sundar Pichai promises another year of Google layoffs

Sundar Pichai tells employees to brace for "tough choices... throughout the year."

@arstechnica If any company actually had compassion for their workers, they'd cut the compensation of C-suite positions FIRST, and well before any . They should take responsibility for mismanagement and overspending by making their own sacrifices, especially since they were calling the shots. That none of these companies are considering lowering CEO pay first shows the cuts aren't about saving money, they're about greed and taking back power from the general workforce. It's class-warfare

Chicago-area Tesla charging stations are lined with dead cars and have essentially turned into car graveyards as temperatures have dropped to the negative double digits: “A bunch of dead robots out here” https://finance.yahoo.com/news/chicago-area-tesla-charging-stations-024817227.html

ChrisFerguson,
@ChrisFerguson@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorlorenz This story seems a bit all over the place. It sounds to me like a popular place to charge Teslas is having issues, and people who can't charge at home or use their cars as Uber/Lyft services are not able to charge due to the station being offline, not the cars having issues.

Check out the thread @TechConnectify just posted earlier today, and maybe look forward to his video on it!

Maybe will help lower both the Used EV market and put pressure to lower the new market prices too...

But ultimately probably not great for the environment if they're just going to replace their sold fleet with gas.

So, what do you think we should do vis-a-vis AI and copyright? I've found that the discussion tends to center on what people think is legal, but more important to me is the question of how to get the many benefits of AI while continuing to incentivize the hard work of research, writing, developing artistic styles, etc.

Like, generative AI seems to me to be new legal territory. What do we want out of it?

ChrisFerguson,
@ChrisFerguson@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith
A monkey that takes a picture with a camera cannot claim copyright on the picture. Nor can the camera owner or the person who develops the film. I think the same rules should apply to AI creations. AI can be useful without allowing the stuff people ask it to make be owned.

We have a bit of a sad announcement to make today. Just in time for Christmas, it appears Nintendo has made some changes to Nintendo Network making it so new users cannot play online. In any game. It is not clear whether or not this is intentional, and Nintendo has made no announcements regarding this so far. However it is likely related to the shutdown (either an issue with scaling things back, like with Super Mario Maker, or an intentional rollout of the shutdown)

We have gone into greater detail about this issue in our latest blog post (we didn't forget about our blog) https://pretendo.network/blog/12-23-23

ChrisFerguson,
@ChrisFerguson@mastodon.social avatar

@pretendo
To be clear, this doesn't affect the Pretendo services, correct? Just stops people from using the existing Official Nintendo services, which are not required to use Pretendo?

It's me, I'm that guy. Now, what should I play? :think_unamused:

@dannyjpalmer If you're asking for legitimate suggestions, I have several! I can't tell if you're actually asking though based on the emoji at the end. So I don't want to assume. Have fun! It's a great system! I just got one to give to my brother for Christmas!

ChrisFerguson,
@ChrisFerguson@mastodon.social avatar

@dannyjpalmer Since you're coming from Gameboy, I'd suggest subscribing to the full NSO service. From there you can "catch up" with games from Gameboy, NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy Advance, and Sega Genesis which are all included with the subscription! Highly recommend Zelda games on the N64, as well as most other first party titles. NSO alone has enough content to play for months if you never played it before!

Just discovered the Dropbox had turned on -- without my assent -- a feature that let it use what I've stored there for AI training, which means it was being sent to "Open"AI. I had to opt out, and only did it after being alerted here on Mastodon to the fact that this was happening. (h/t @natematias)

This is a disgusting betrayal, and I'm looking for an alternative to Dropbox.

(Update: This story from CNBC says Dropbox CEO claims the sharing "only" occurs if you use the AI tools in the site.)

Sync.com

Priced better than Dropbox with almost all the same features...plus they encrypt your files so that no one, not even themselves, can access your data besides you. Give them a shot, I bet they won't disappoint.

Biggest downside is they don't work on Linux.
