The findings from Oil Change International wouldn't come as a surprise to many.
They reveal a stark disconnect between the climate plans of the 8 largest US and European-based international oil & gas producers, and the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
The strategies of US firms Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil were found to be ‘grossly insufficient’ across all evaluated criteria.
"The global average concentration of carbon dioxide in March this year was 4.7 parts per million (or ppm) higher than it it was in March last year, which is a record-breaking increase in CO2 levels over a 12-month period".
Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) continue to register at unprecedentedly high levels.
We usually ignore the SSTs but this is very important. When oceans surface temperatures rises above a certain level, the ocean becomes a desert. That is because a stable surface layer of warm water forms that stays unmixed with the cooler, nutrient-rich waters below.
India is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with very high temperatures in many areas. The heat is so intense that a TV presenter fainted live on air.
The En-ROADS Climate Solutions Simulator - a powerful, user-friendly and dynamic tool for exploring pathways to address #climatechange
The default "status-quo" scenario is alarming, projecting a 3.3°C rise by 2100 that could render regions uninhabitable.
After spending some time modifying several variables, I produced a very optimistic scenario for the year 2100. Still, 1.7°C is a significant increase. ( image ⬇️)
A Nature study predicts that #climatechange will have a significant economic impact globally within the next 26 years.
The research, analyzing data from over 1,600 regions, suggests a potential reduction in worldwide income by 19% over the next 25 years, resulting in an annual economic loss of approximately $38 trillion by 2049.
The impact varies significantly between developed and developing countries, with poorer countries bearing a disproportionate burden.
@johncarlosbaez I 've checked it out of curiocity. According to one website (Statistcs Time) in 2023, the GWP was estimated to be around $104.48 trillion in nominal terms. Not sure how reliable is this number though.
I couldn't find any information that shows what the annual worldwide income is in real terms, but it must be significantly higher than the nominal value.
@Climatehistories - My searches for the world total income also led me to statistics about the gross world product. But I think they're very different - if only because this paper is saying the total worldwide income for the next 25 years will only be $162 trillion, while we're seeing the gross world product was about $104 trillion last year.
I didn't get much clarification from the paper you're talking about, at least not yet.
The situation in #Sudan is tragic but only a few media outlets have been reporting on the crisis.
The UN has warned that Sudan is facing the "biggest food crisis the world has seen in decades", with up to 18 million people at risk of catastrophic #famine
I'm reading that Save the Children has warned that nearly 230,000 children, pregnant women and new mothers could die from #hunger in Sudan without urgent action and funding.
#ClimateChange is exacerbating mental disorders, which already affect almost one billion people and are among the world’s biggest causes of ill health.
A global survey in 2021 found that more than half of people aged 16–25 felt sad, anxious or powerless, or had other negative emotions about climate change.
Altogether, hundreds of millions of people might be experiencing some type of negative psychological response to the #climatecrisis
In a landmark Judgemnt and following ECHR ruling yesterday, India’s Supreme Court rules that #climatechange “impacts the constitutional guarantee of [the] right to life”, emphasising that the country must prioritise renewable energy “as citizens have a right to be free from the adverse effects of the climate emergency.”
The EU’s recent retreat from its ambitious environmental goals may benefit far-right groups, however for the rest of us, it’s a disaster.
Key environmental pledges, such as #pesticide use, green #farming practices, and other environmental reforms, have been abandoned in response to aggressive lobbying and protests by farmers.
Tax the wealthy for climate. Trying to put the cost of getiing out of the deadly one way culde sac oil coeps have driven us, onto its VICTIMS, is real billionaire bullshit.
Europe doesnt WANT A RETREAT FROM GREENM THEY WANT THE RICH, WHO GOT RICH IN OIL TO PAY TO END OIL.
Just as Biden is. Two trillion from corps for wind generation and FREE HEAT PUMPS.
