The flowers of this maize/corn plant are buzzing with bees. Pinch and zoom for details.

@Deus thats a really interesting photo because for years it was argued neonicitinoid insecticides were totally safe on maize as, being a wind pollinated crop, bees don't visit it. Total rubbish of course

Hey, look, did it to me too.

They didn't lock up my entire drive, but they're blocking access to my manuscript. Won't even allow me to download it.

Google Docs is handy for editing your copy. However, Google Drive 1) uses your data to build their AI, and 2) is subject to lockdown based on their censorship.

Once again, if you don't want to shell out for Scrivener, I recommend Calmly Writer. It's a stripped-down markup editor, a little more sophisticated than Notepad. Save your work in a variety of file types. Free or $11. Do not rely on the cloud.

TatianaIlyina, to academia

Just learned that a very promising early career scientist in my discipline has left academia, not seeing a desired career future for herself here. That company is lucky to get her. Yet, it saddens me enormously that it is often the most dynamic, brilliant, curious once, who are challenging status quo, committed to diversity and making our world a better place, who are leaving .

What are we doing wrong to make academic careers so unattractive for the best young minds?

SRDas,
@SRDas@mastodon.online avatar

@TatianaIlyina the system is broken.
the days of academics running universities (and rotating out) are gone. Universities are mostly hedge funds with some academic divisions (and/or athletics) for revenue. And that's not even going into the related publishing industry.
It is working ok for whom the system was designed for perhaps. But that demographic has changed
