I dunno if anyone has been watching #XMen97, it's a little rocky but I am really liking it overall. It seems clear to me that when you have a gay black man as the showrunner, you wind up getting a very different kind of show that has a lot to say about oppression, prejudice, respectability politics, problems with allyship, etc. My biggest issue has been the pacing, they are trying to cram a lot of plot lines into 10 30min episodes and it sometimes feels rushed. Still well worth a watch. #XMen

Finally watching The Hunt for Red October. It's a very silly movie.

Eliot_L,
@Eliot_L@social.coop avatar

@bitprophet As a kid the "Hymn for Red October" would get stuck in my head: https://youtu.be/AVBCxnKudhs

I probably wasn't alone in thinking this was a real Russian song, but of course it was written for the movie and actual Russians have never heard it. Somehow it sounds more stereotypically Soviet than a lot of actual Soviet army songs, but maybe that was by design for the American ear.

Same deal with Sound of Music's "Eidelweiss" in Austria, but that one isn't even in the right language!

@paris This is a small project but I had a great experience contributing to https://github.com/BaronVonPerko/fitbit-roni which is a FOSS Fitbit watch face. I notified the maintainer that I had forked the app to add some features. I wasn't even asking for a merge, but they merged my changes anyway, prominently credited me, and made a prompt release!

Macs are bad for gaming because if you made games for it, they’re likely to not work with future Mac OS releases and hardware.

@atomicpoet Recently when researching the Chicago New Media art scene I came across this video about exactly this issue, it was exactly the same problem way back in 2013 https://youtu.be/1GyvH3LApDI?si=Ow9YZUEkZ_LfgX1y

@atomicpoet Somewhat counterintuitively, these days I have an easier time running old windows programs on my Steam Deck which is basically Arch Linux, than either actual current Windows, or Mac versions of those same games on current macOS.

Fans of Cryo's 1992 #Dune game for #MSDOS might know that the composer, Stéphane Picq, released a remixed and remastered version of the excellent soundtrack the same year on CD, but it was extremely rare and difficult to acquire legally.

I just discovered he's finally sorted out the legal issues surrounding this album and released a freshly remastered version that also includes the original AdLib soundtrack. It's free to stream, so check it out!

    Hey so by the way, I use Tidal, and it has

    • The best artist payout rates of any music subscription-streaming service other than whoever now owns the "Napster" trademark https://www.lalal.ai/blog/music-streaming-payouts-2023/

    • Very good recommendations including a human curated new-music section

    • Has never given arbitrary multi-million bonus payouts to denialist transphobes

    • (Iffy) Despite being bought by Jack Dorsey's holding company has not yet gone blockchain

    • (Downside) Unfortunately quite bad IoT/Smart TV apps

    Eliot_L,
    @Eliot_L@social.coop avatar

    @streganil @mcc This is pretty much what I do, although YouTube Music has free hosting for up to 100k tracks which seems like plenty. So if I am trying new music I stream it there with ads. If I like it enough I buy it on iTunes/Bandcamp and upload to listen in the cloud ad-free. Feels better to me than paying for a subscription because the artists get a much bigger cut and I own my library in DRM-free format. Just my 2¢.

    Eliot_L,
    @Eliot_L@social.coop avatar

    @mcc @streganil Wow, that's truly despicable. Truly incomprehensible in that sort of mundanely evil bureaucratic way. Sorry you had to deal with that. Crap like this is why I try to avoid DRM'd purchases. With music it's pretty easy these days. Unfortunately some other types of media like eBooks, audiobooks, and movies are still frequently DRM'd and I wind up buying those when there are no alternatives.

    One of my favorite tracks by our former #GameDev team's #music composer Ramon Braumuller: the 4-channel, 8-bit title sequence music of our 1992 #Amiga game Hoi.

    The track was made in our own music editor: Digital Mugician, published in 1990 by the British Thalamus.

    There's a bundle for sale at https://www.humblebundle.com/books/terry-pratchetts-discworld-harpercollins-books
    $18 minimum for 38 books

    I think this would be a great buy for someone looking to get into Discworld, with a few caveats:

    • They are Kobo DRM'd eBooks so you can't read them on a non-Kobo eReader without stripping off the DRM
    • It's not a complete set (but it's close, I think they are only missing 3 of the main novels)

    @flancian I think we shouldn't sign it unless we redo the vote on threads and decide to entirely block the domain, otherwise it seems a bit misleading.

    Once, I had the idea to take the font I read social media in, replace one letter at a time with one of my own design, until I've replaced the entire alphabet, over several months.

    I wanted to see if I could ease myself into reading my own alphabet. And you know what? It worked!

    The attached image is how I read social media now, and I'm comfortable reading it this way!

    @Nifflas Fascinating. The human brain is pretty amazing! I remember after decoding a very long piece of dialogue in Fez I realized I could then read the game's alphabet without consulting my translation key.

    Even if you think I'm overly COVID cautious and disagree with much of what I say... please, please, at least for your own sake:

    If you get COVID, DO NOT PUSH THROUGH IT. Even after you start testing negative.

    Seriously, learn from people with ME/CFS.

    Pushing through is how you increase your already quite-high odds of having long lasting or permanent damage.
