2/22/24 – Open 6-9p. Mask recommended. No open drinks, please.

Two very interesting books from a pile of new arrivals. Are they Philosophy? Writing? Sociology? I love the challenge of shelving cross-topic books. I'll probably put them in Science... Or, just let them float around the tables for a bit and see who finds them first. 😉

Geoffberner,

@BonnettsBooks @bookstodon masks required or its a super spreader, pro-Eugenics event.

People: Can we buy those cute, crash-tested $10k electric cars the Chinese are making?
U.S. Car Companies: No, that would destroy us.
People: Are you going to make some EV's we can afford?
U.S. Car Companies: No. Just mostly 70k+ giant electric SUV's.
(later that day)
U.S. Car Companies: Nobody wants EVs! Might as well stop makin' em!

Geoffberner,

@shekinahcancook economies of scale are too huge at this point. Rivian loses 30k for every car it sells because it only sells tens of thousands, not hundreds of thousands. And they charge 90k. Only the Chinese have done the ground work for this industry. They are about 5 years ahead of any effort any americans could make.

For my new pals on Mastodon, as part of my semi-regular reminder that my main deal is I'm a singer/songwriter, here's probably my most-heard song, the wonderful Be Good Tanyas' recording of my "Light Enough to Travel". This is the song that launched me into full-time making-a-living musician. We need to normalize the basic, provable principle that those in charge are the ones to blame.

If the Democrats lose this year, that will be the fault of their leadership, and those who supported their leadership when they failed to embrace obviously popular left wing policies like stopping new oil and gas infrastructure, medicare-for-all and public social housing. It will not be the fault of a fringe of radical college kids and old hippies who don't vote. If you really think the people who stay home because they can find no one to vote for are to blame, that's all the proof necessary that you are in fact, a member of the group who is really to blame. #democrats #biden #VoteBlue

Do you ever think about that time Bonnie Henry and the rest of the BC government killed 10x as many people with their negligence in ONE East Van care home, 10x more than all the people who'd died of Covid so far in NZ, total? And the press just told us it was a thing that was happening? I do. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/death-tally-rises-little-mountain-place-1.5863404

the bipartisan “free trade” era, a gift that keeps on giving

“In Odyssey’s case, it claimed Mexico had breached its rights under the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) by making what it described as a politically motivated decision to reject the mine, disregarding scientific evidence. It said the value of its investment had been destroyed, along with future profits, and demanded $3.54bn (£2.8bn), later reduced to $2.36bn.”

@seachanger it's the reason we in BC are handing billions to Shell Oil, for instance. We aren't even permitted to know what price BC would pay for cancelling Shell's LNG boondoggle.

Please, liberals. For the love of God, stop obsessing over 3rd Party voters and those who refuse to vote. It's insane. These people provably did NOT hand Al Gore or Hilary Clinton their defeats. Put your energy into HELPING people vote who already want to. Get Out the Vote is a thing. A set of activities that determines elections. And it doesn't involve scolding people. If Biden loses, it won't be because the Russians convinced people to vote for some wacko. It'll be because you didn't sign up to drive an old lady to the polls.

Geoffberner,

@TruthSandwich the math doesn't say what you think it says. The central fallacy of this received nytimes wisdom is the notion that every Sanders or Stein voter is a stolen or potential Clinton or Biden voter. You need to provide some proof for that. And there isn't any. There certainly is no proof of that in these numbers.

Geoffberner,

@TruthSandwich what the math actually says is: The higher the amount of votes for a left 3rd party candidate, the better the odds that the state goes blue. This has been true at least going back as far as FDR, whose massive margins happened when the Progressive Party was getting double digits.

Geoffberner,

@TruthSandwich the math says that the number of people who want to vote for Biden but are prevented because of logistical, political and economic barriers, is vastly larger than the number of people who vote for Jill Stein. And the math says that only a tiny % of Stein voters were going to vote for a Democrat if she hadn't been on the ballot. Not the margin of victory in any contest.

Geoffberner,

@HeavenlyPossum She lost. Clinton accepted the crazy rules of the electoral college without complaint, mistakenly confident that the rules would work for her. Her team lost because they and the Obama administration failed to discern the threat of Russian troll farms and dark money social media ads until it was too late. It's not the Olympics. Republicans cheating is a given as part of the contest. She lost because it's a power struggle where anything goes and if you bring a knife to a gunfight you shouldn't be surprised about what happens next.

Just saw someone on DW stating the Biden campaign is eager to get Taylor Swift's endorsement. While I seriously doubt she would because of brand damage she would be doing. I know she has a pretty good grasp of business which is why her political statements are measured. Swift knows Biden is tanking with young voters which includes many of her fans, endorsing him would be seen as a betrayal.

I know I know but liberals want it so bad.😮‍💨

Geoffberner,

@Sh4d0w_H34rt seems like a non-issue because she endorsed him in 2020. She's obviously going to do it again. Her team is clearly just riding this wave of publicity, judging when would be the most splashy moment to announce it. They're probly waiting to see if her boyfriend's team wins the Superbowl or not. I'd like to think she might withhold it, at least until he does something large and tangible for struggling people in her fanbase, but I'd be shocked if she did.

I was raised to be a Zionist. The hardest thing about letting it go for me was that they taught us that the Holocaust wasn't meaningless, because it opened the door to the creation of a Jewish State. Without that connection, it's back to just dealing with a world that can't ever entirely make sense to human beings.

Geoffberner,

@gemelliz Canada is so hilariously, toxically polite. "Unclear why"? No it isn't. It's not unclear at all. In no way, shape or form is it unclear. That's like when all these kids are dying of strep and Canadian officials and journalists can only permit themselves to say it's "concerning".

It's very stressful dealing with parents who have been hypnotized by the state into infecting their children, while we're trying to keep ours from getting sick.

I think some people don't understand that feudalism was/is a social/economic system; not a time period. You could theoretically have a feudal state and still have modern conveniences.

It's an arrangement of power.

It's not the same as pre-industrial agrarianism just because the height of those two things coincided.

Geoffberner,

@PacificNic at least under Feudalism, powerful families' sons had to ride at the front of the battle. Their privileges were tied to their willingness to be a great big target on a horse.

When people say "we have to learn to live with it," or "we can't live our lives in fear" it's like the scene in the zombie movie when someone's cuff slips and you see the bite.
