I was involved in a short discussion about hair ice. It surprised me that other people, in Scotland, had never seen hair ice. For me, it is a very common sight.

To see hair ice one needs frosty conditions, suitable wood (deciduous branches are good, particularly beech), and, crucially, the presence of Exidiopsis effusa. Currently, I have an abundance of all three elements.

To-day, I found several examples, after a quick search. The attached photo was the best.

Ok mastodon, (or at least the part of it currently going through a big freeze), show me your strange ice pictures, your weird ice spikes, needle ice, hair ice and frazil ice, your beautiful ice crystals.

Is a thing year? It should be. I'll start.

@Ruth_Mottram Here you go, ice spike from November.

What a totally frustrating day.

Miserable weather with storms and lashing rain. Got caught in two road closures. Electricity supply has been cut all day, which also meant no 'phone calls or Internet access.

Power, and thus Internet, now restored, but, still no 'phone calls. I needed to make some online purchases, but, couldn't receive the verification codes by SMS.

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!

Glencoe,

@fitheach Dodged that bullet .... unless it get stormy again tonight / tomorrow ... heading south on a mission tomorrow.

I've cut two four metre saw logs – a size I should be able to haul out and load up on the sawmill by myself – from the huge tree that came down beside the house in November. It's not a huge achievement, but it isn't nothing.

I'll get two more four metre saw logs out of this one, maybe three, and one of those will certainly be too big to move by myself. And then, there are lots more fallen trees to saw.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fedops @simon_brooke Yip, good chance of saw getting stuck in there I'd think. Personally I think I'd wedge it, though as pointed out there is room for undercut which might go ok without wedging. I'm no expert, so don't take my advice as being any sort of gospel! Good going though, big stick for a small saw 👍

Jings, it's windy and wet out. Already been out to rescue the fruit cage door which had come off it's latch, I think the post has moved a bit but the hinges seem ok. Put the tarp back on the dry, now wet, firewood, bit of a struggle with that. And the recycling bin was on its side with contents strewn everywhere. Got soaked.

@fitheach It's been pissing here all day. My doggy pal, who will have to go out sometime, is currently in, "I'm not going out there no way no how pal" mode, is hiding in his secret den under a bed that nobody knows about 😂

Epson Stylus Color 740

It is that time of year again when I dig-out the old, reliable Epson to print some small photos. I've been doing this every year since 1997. The Stylus Color 740 has never let me down, and the quality is still good enough for small prints.

I don't have any other IT devices with this longevity.

Thanks Epson.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach Had an HP Deskjet 500 for decades. Got it when I had an Atari ST. Black and white only, omg that thing did a whole big pile of printing, was still working fine when I binned it a few years back, unbreakable.

This was originally a photo of water in a river, the River Nevis I believe. Then I did stuff to it, I may have been slightly inebriated and quite possibly listening to very loud music at the time. I like it. I have no idea how to adequately describe this in the alt text.

Between pouring rain, ice and snow I haven't been out on my bike for over a week. Today looks to be cold but dry so I'm going to get wrapped up and give it a go.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke @CloudyMrs It's a forestry track, boiler plate frozen for about a mile. Going up was ummm interesting, coming back down (hadn't really thought about that going up) was sketchy AF! It's really quite steep and has sharp bends, the words arse, making, and buttons, come to mind. Won't do that again lightly ... being chased by the four horsemen of the apocalypse may just persuade.

fitheach, to food
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

Food prices have increased significantly in recent months. One item , in particular, caught my attention yesterday. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is now £5.40 per litre, and that's at a "low-cost" supermarket. I'm not sure what the price was previously, but, I'm certain it wasn't that costly.

Has there been a failure in the olive crop this year, or is it something else?

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach "The olive oil industry is “in crisis”, and the heatwave in southern Europe is threatening to inflict the second bad harvest in a row and gaps on shelves this autumn."

I've had some strange questions from tourists, but this dude was asking if there is any crystalline dylithium in the area! He didn't look best pleased when I told him he'd likely have to go to one of the bigger branches of B&Q in the city for it.

There's been a buzzard knocking about here for a while now, see it almost daily. Finally it landed close enough and stayed there for long enough for me to go get a camera and suitable lens, and shoot off a quick photie through the kitchen window before it left.

@simon_brooke Static balance works very well on model helicopter blades so long as there is close to zero friction at the pivot. What static balance won't detect is any distortion of the blades which I imagine might well cause vibration, and be difficult to detect with the naked eye.

“[Climeworks] declined to share how much carbon it has captured or how much energy, on average, the process has used.”

Given the rampant fraud in the voluntary carbon market, this lack of transparency is an interesting choice.
