What terms can stand in for LGBTQIA+? It really is a mouthful (mindful?). I see #gay and #queer used as catch-alls, but I've also seen people take umbrage with that. Can someone help me out with more #words here?

There may be some feedback effects from the callousness and shallow "strength" of Trump's politics on the situation, but they're more diffuse and abstract than causative, IMO.

So much web content is rotten. And this is what AI is trained on. I’m researching an environmental crime in Brazil, the collapse of an iron ore mine in Brumadinho. The collapse caused a tidal wave of mud that, among other things, totally destroyed a hotel, killing everyone inside. Years after the hotel was destroyed, Google “Local Guides” were reviewing the ghost hotel as excellent.

@maxleibman @gerrymcgovern

On the SEO site side they jumped on AI very early after GPT's release (and had previously been using T5 paraphrasers) then many backed off to human editing again after realizing the quality wasn't good enough on full auto, even for spam sites.

So in a way the humans are back in charge already at the professional spam agencies. Pumping out the same formulas even faster and trying to figure out what to do about Google's SGE, a growing threat to that industry.

AI "doesn’t have any concept of truth or fact (it was trained on the internet, after all)."

"It is important to appreciate that LLMs’ leaps in syntactic fluency don’t translate into being better able to automatically look up facts — a problem that has confronted computer science for decades with incremental progress."

https://hbr.org/2024/01/is-genais-impact-on-productivity-overblown

HumanServitor,
@HumanServitor@mastodon.social avatar

@gerrymcgovern

The area where the gap between the hype and the reality is least overblown is in programming (paired with a person).

And I think a big reason for that, in regard to the Harvard article, is that coding inherently involves a truth verification process (debugging, interpreting/compiling, testing). If you ask GPT about syntax and it hallucinates, you know right away because code doesn't work.

So, that jives that their utility is a function of their ability to produce true output.

I had a set of ideas for how one might build an AGI. Obvious technical problems with it include:

  1. Wouldn't even be able to steal the training data: an unknown amount of it would have to be in a form that humans can easily create but AFAIK haven't.
  2. I would have to figure out how to do a neural network that can effectively use hot-loadable modules.

Does anyone have any advice here on how to make your Mastodon less eurocentric? I do regular searches, follow people from outside Europe/US whenever I come across them, etc, but it’s quite slow, hard work. I was wondering whether there is a more strategic way - ie is there a list of instances that are not Europe/US based, and from which I could follow one person each or something? Not interested in changing my own instance, just to get more global connections.

HumanServitor,
@HumanServitor@mastodon.social avatar

@pvonhellermannn

I do it mostly via the "all servers" feed. And once in a while I spend 10 mins following new people for the express purpose of forging connections to new instances.

I want to enlarge my world too. I feel decently connected to U.S., Europe, and Aus/NZ. Less so Central/South America, and much less so Asia and Africa. I think I only follow two accounts that I'm sure are in Africa. I'd love more African connections, I'm super curious about life there.

For the last couple decades the GOP have pinned their policy advances to a kind of civil terrorism. It goes like this: Give us the power to fix X, or we'll shut down the government and cause suffering for the entire nation.

Sometimes it works, because we all agree something should be done about X and most folks aren't policy wonks. Then they offer simplistic fixes no one serious can accept, fix nothing, and shift their focus to the next problem they want to manufacture fear with.

Re: Trump removal from ballots.

The argument that Trump needs to be defeated at the ballot box for the sake of democracy rather than being removed by action of law is utter nonsense.

The underlying assumption is that Trump voters will feel cheated, robbed of their votes, and that is a danger to democracy (unspoken: civil war).

And how is that different from them losing the election? The whole point of Trump's cult is that he didn't lose, that even if he does it's fraud.

1/2

HumanServitor,
@HumanServitor@mastodon.social avatar

No matter what, Trump voters are going to believe they were robbed.

So the rest of us, living in objective reality, should remove Trump according to our laws. That will deal with the threat as far as the system and laws.

Then we will have to deal with the social fallout, which is going to happen either way, because a tremendous number of people have been deceived, and aren't happy about having that pointed out to them.

We can't keep transferring attention and wealth to billionaires while blindly hoping they will selectively choose to focus their attention and resources on the world’s actual problems. It's like giving a room full of 5-year-olds a tub of ice cream and an iPad and hoping they retile the kitchen.

HumanServitor,
@HumanServitor@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan

And when you attack the very concept of individuals being able to control that much wealth (in the U.S.), ordinary people act as though you are undermining the entire meaning of life.

It's a worldview that doesn't care that almost no one actually becomes a billionaire. It's the potential to be fabulously wealthy that unleashes American ingenuity (read: cheap labor and capital gains).

If only the Bible had a story about a mother & infant fleeing death & tyranny to desperately seek refuge in a foreign land—maybe politicians would humanize parents & kids fleeing death & tyranny to desperately seek refuge in USA.
