We are witnessing a picture-perfect example of a moral panic.

"D.C. police rejected pleas from George Washington University officials to clear pro-Palestinian demonstrators out of an on-campus encampment early Friday morning, saying they worried about the optics of moving against a small number of peaceful protesters, according to two officials familiar with the talks."
The Independent's Richard Hall responds to a twoot by Jake Sherman characterizing some antisemitic nutter as being "at the Columbia protest": "Bad reporting like this convinced people that the Columbia protesters are anti-Semitic crazies. "This person has nothing to do with Columbia, is a well-known agitator. "And yet a journo snaps a pic outside the gates and uses it to smear the students inside"
Headline: "Richie Torres, Mike Lawler introduce bill to create campus antisemitism monitors" Dek: "The lawmakers named the bill the COLUMBIA (College Oversight and Legal Updates Mandating Bias Investigations and Accountability) Act."

All the elements are there: The marginalized folk devil (Palestinians & their supporters); the stereotype (don't care about Palestine, just want to kill Jews); the threat amplification by institutions, media & pols; and efforts to leverage that exaggerated threat to exert greater social control.

These protests are obviously newsworthy but there's no reason why college kids setting up camps and calling for a ceasefire should be anywhere near the proverbial front page or leading cable newscasts. And they certainly aren't a matter that should concern members of Congress.

The quantity, prominence and tone of the reporting are creating the perception that a series of not-exceptional or unprecedented campus anti-war protests represent a crisis that requires intervention by administrators, police and politicians.

It's good that aid finally passed but six months of dithering in an attempt to appease MTG and other pro-Kremlin figures allowed Russia to regain the initiative and make significant progress--and killed a lot of Ukrainians.

Many of those caught in the grip of this moral panic over pro-ceasefire protesters were once young people who protested Vietnam or Iraq.

And unlike what we’re seeing today, the Vietnam anti-war movement featured quite a bit of actual radicalism.

Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a motion to vacate without triggering a vote on it 5 weeks ago and since then she's been followed around wherever she goes by a phalanx of journos and leveraged the massive attention she's been getting for fundraising.

I don't know that anything can be done about it but the perverse incentives here are just so obvious.

Free speech is alive and well on American campuses as students are welcome to protest injustice as long as their slogans are perfectly calibrated to offend noone and can withstand the scrutiny of bad-faith actors and no individual among them is a hothead who's said some offensive shit either during the protest or previously on social media. #gazaprotests #censorship #acab

If these college kids were protesting an American war the media would barely even mention it.

I know that because I marched through LA with 30,000 people in 2003 and it merited a small story in the Metro section.

I’ve been friends with this gay couple for a couple of years. We have each other over for dinner pretty regularly. A while back, they gave me the exciting news that they’re having a baby and I asked about the surrogate.

Friends, there is no surrogate. So yes, men can get pregnant. Dudes you know.
