@MattHodges @andypiper I mean. The author refers to conferences in
Missouri, Ohio, Texas, South Carolina, Florida. The exact same stuff is happening in their public schools too.

Visit a homeschooling group in the Bay Area or NYC, and you’ll feel much better! 🤗

Pretty wild to see Automattic acquire Texts, the interoperable messaging service to bring different chat apps together.

Here are some details by @johnvoorhees, who spoke with Automattic's Matt Mullenweg about it: https://www.macstories.net/news/automattic-acquires-interoperable-messaging-service-texts/

LauraLangdon,
@LauraLangdon@hachyderm.io avatar

@andypiper @viticci @johnvoorhees I love Texts! I’m also on Beeper to see which ends up being better (since Beeper is still free), and so far Texts wins for me even without a mobile app or Matrix support yet. And it sounds like those are two top priorities for Automattic, so I’m a happy girl!

Couples of Mastodon! How do you handle emails for "joint" things?

Like utility bills, hotel reservations, and other domestic accounts.

Please 🔁 the 📊 for extra reach 🙂

LauraLangdon,
@LauraLangdon@hachyderm.io avatar

@Edent Emails come to me, but logins for things like that are in a shared 1Password vault (including my email login, for the bus factor). I forward emails when needed but that’s rare. I add his email as an attendee to calendar events that pertain to both of us.

My brain can’t help but organize all the things, while my husband’s would just as soon not, so this setup works well for us.

Fellow folks! If you, like me, have been patiently waiting to opt-in to full-text search and thought you couldn't yet because there didn't seem to be an announcement that it was ready after the announcement that it was not ready, rejoice! Turns out it was enabled a couple of weeks ago. 🎉

And if you're even more like me: don't expect to find the opt-in under Settings -> Preferences! It's Settings -> Public Profile, and it's up at the top, cleverly disguised as “Totally not a button”.

Hi @MonaApp! Is there a way in Mona to use these new features from 4.2.0? 🙏

  • Show conditional search options; e.g. “has”, “from”
  • Exclusive lists: stops posts in lists also appearing in the Home feed?
  • See results button on polls

Anyone have suggestions about the best way to do this? Best apps? Services?

Because older generations tend to be more conservative than younger generations, it looks like people get more conservative with age.

This is, thankfully, untrue.

People get more progressive with age.

It's just that previous generations get a little left behind. The jump between generations is bigger than the progress that happens within people, giving the illusion that older people become more conservative.

Some good news for once. 😊

I for one am working on trying to put things in place that will attract contributors (and maybe even a user or two) and I feel like I'm missing a lot but also lacking so much of this thing people are calling time….

Can I onboard onboarders and have contributors contribute to helping to get contributors to contribute?

I wish let people set up subchannels instead of having different channels for each of a creator’s distinct interests. Like if I made videos about tech, makeup/hair, and The Neuroverse, a person who hit “Subscribe” would be presented with those categories to choose from.

This appeals to me in “Let’s be whole humans” sort of way, and also because dudes will lose their entire minds if they subscribe to a femme’s content and they don’t feel like every bit of it is applicable to them.

Remember when we were able to eliminate entire flu strains when people were masking at the beginning of the covid epidemic? Fun times

LauraLangdon,
@LauraLangdon@hachyderm.io avatar

@currentbias @cwdolunt One-way masking doesn’t protect as much against colds as it does Covid, unfortunately. Maybe if you add goggles, I guess.

LauraLangdon,
@LauraLangdon@hachyderm.io avatar

@currentbias @cwdolunt For sure! Just as a person who’s never stopped masking indoors in public or outdoors in crowds, I’ve successfully avoided catching Covid but have had numerous colds in the same timeframe.

#BlackMastodon only:

The debate about whether parents should or should not spend time educating their kids after school, or if that's the school's job, has strong opinions all around.

I don't judge any opinions on the spectrum, because I know that those that feel like "it's the school's job" say so more out of the reality of time constraints of surviving US racism as an underpaid Black person, and I know that Black parents are more likely to help their kids with homework.

And... 2 Sigma🤷🏿‍♂️

LauraLangdon,
@LauraLangdon@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke 3) All quizzes and exams were take-home and were open for a week. Take all the time you need. I wasn't worried about cheating, because:

  1. Before I graded a student's exam, we met one-on-one to go over it. If a student couldn't walk me through how they got their answers, then they got partial credit for the bits they could explain. It almost never happened that a student had a full, correct solution that they couldn’t justify. 4/n
LauraLangdon,
@LauraLangdon@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke What did happen all the time was students got more points by walking me through than they would have otherwise. They'd catch their own mistakes, and often they could explain verbally what they hadn't written down (and after talking it through, they could write it down). N/n
