An old techie who occasionally uses new tech. Teacher by trade. Psychology and Critical Thinking are my subjects, YMMV.

I don't give a flying fig who you have relationships with, what you do in your bedroom or what you do in your church, as long as you don't expect me or anyone else to think, do or believe as you do.

I used to say that all my cultural references are 20+ years old, but that is now out of date. All my cultural references are from the previous century.

Thoughts on Traitor Tucker:

Carlson wanted the interview to be a political sensation and an information breakthrough.

It turned out to be mediocre and unimpressive.

The conversation was boring, stretched out, with meaningless repetitions.

Carlson was mentally absent from the interview. There was no active manner of conducting the conversation.

He looked completely superfluous. He was being used, and he finally realized that.

Very good review (of something I didn't see).

It is almost exactly the same as my thoughts of Rush Limbaugh when he was "King of Radio." Rush's show was crushingly boring. You could almost hear the voice in the back of his head screaming, "Must come up with something shocking -- like feminzis -- and must do it soon!" While he blathered boring crap in between hemorrhoid cream and penis pill ads.

Possibly Unpopular Opinion Alert:

This year's season was pretty boring.

Last year we had Fem vs Puck vs Shirin with Lucinda Brand and Ceylon Alvarado always close at hand. This year Puck was Mtn Biking and Shirin was injured. Fem won everything and Ceylon and Lucinda won when she wasn't there. Other than Zoe Bäckstedt not much happened.

The men's side was similar. Last year we had the Iserbyt vs Sweeck grudge match in the early part of the year, followed by the Big Three lighting up a number of races and the Rainbow Jersey being won by inches. This year, Wout was a non-factor (trying to lose weight for the Giro?), Pidcock was also a non-factor (Mtn and Road). Sweeck had a terrible year and MVDP won everything by a country mile (or kilometer).

Kinda boring if you ask me. Hope next year will be more interesting!

Scientists have announced the discovery of a previously unknown continent.

Speculation has it that the continent may have been lost through some sort of geologic or tidal actions.

A farmstead near Gleason has been invaded by one or more giant spiders.

In the same area a Volkswagen Beetle has been reported missing. It is not known if the two incidents are related.

I am a big fan of the , everyone should give it a listen, it is always interesting.

I do wish we would stop using the phrase (word?) "AI" as it strongly implies that it actually is that when it is clearly not.

I also do have to keep reminding myself that there are many applications where running huge numbers of mathematical correlations and other models make perfect sense and are very useful (for example investigating proteins or deciphering ancient documents). I almost feel that all the AI hype is actually hurting those kinds of applications by distracting engineers into thinking that having computers write travelogues in the place of people who have actually been to the place is much more profitable.

The NYT tells us that Johnson is incompetent and inexperienced. Isn’t the real problem that he’s a religious extremist acting in bad faith? https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/07/us/politics/johnson-impeachment-israel-aid.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

It does never cease to amaze me how many people don't seem to realize that religion (by its nature of being lead by an invisible and silent entity) is not a unifying force but a dividing one.

Has there been any religion that hasn't split into different denominations almost immediately on formation? Even Buddhism, which technically doesn't even have a god, has denominations.

The GOP is now more of a religious cult than a political party and it is no wonder they can no longer agree on anything.

Perhaps other browsers have this, but reader mode on @Vivaldi has been a game changer for me.

I assigned the Super+R shortcut for it and boom, I am one key stroke away from a reformatted page with large black on white text -- centered and stripped of any stuff that is not necessary.

Perfect for my fading eyesight.

Thanks @Vivaldi !

I don't have much hope for this, but I will see if crowd sourcing can help at all.

I am a stranded US enthusiast. I was stranded by the closure of GCN+. The only way to cobble together the same coverage previously offered by GCN+ is to sign up for 3 different streaming services. That sucks.

I would like to sign up for UK (or any Euro) .

I can sign up for the free parts of the service using a VPN. I can start the signup process, but I cannot get any form of payment to go through. It won't (apparently) take my US credit card and my PayPal won't log in during the payment process.

Has anyone accomplished signing up for Discovery+ from the US? Any ideas for me to try?

I'm going through withdrawal!

For users of any operating system, not just , what might keep you from trying/running an desktop? If you are already running one, why did you choose it?

MylesRyden,

@vwbusguy

I have been running KDE Neon for several years now. I am not a hard core Linux user by any means and mostly use it to run my laptop to do every day things (web browsing, some spreadsheets, writing, maybe reformat some video.) I switched to Linux at the end of the Windows 7 era and after distro hopping for a bit, settled on KDE as my DE of choice (although sometimes I think I should check out the newest version of Gnome, but honestly I am pretty happy where I am with KDE.)

I looked at Fedora recently and was a little put off by the installer, but I understand that may be changing.

I have read a couple of articles on "immutable" operating systems, but frankly I don't really understand what they do and what advantage they might have for a more casual user such as myself.

BREAKING NEWS 🚨

Putin pulls the strings on his US puppets Donald Trump & Tucker Carlson

✅1. Donald Trump blocks all US aid to Ukraine

✅2. Tucker Carlson interviews Vladimir Putin during his visit to Moscow yesterday. The very positive Putin PR piece will air within days!

Trump and Carlson, played for the fools they are, are the most effective weapons Putin has used against the West!

Don't forget the role of the Murdochs in all of this, somewhere along the line Western "Conservatism" began to mirror Putinism and vice versa. Fox and the other Murdoch outlets had a huge part in this.

And I don't think the Murdochs are useful fools -- they WANT things to be this way.

I find this fascinating. Granted, for the most part religion has always been a regressive, authoritarian force in Western society. But this turn in the last 50 years among evangelical "Christians" has been amazing.

Whatever it was for or against 50 years ago, it is now down to being against a couple of things, mainly abortion and LGBTQ+. But even that is just posturing.

To me, it is all a cover for incredibly deep racism. The posturing about abortion, etc. is so they can say that they are against "behaviors" not people. But they really (really, really) hate "liberals" for being tolerant of people of color, immigrants and so on. And the fact that "liberals" not only tolerate "those people" but actually try to help them drives evangelicals into a rage.

There is no way Jesus would recognize these people as his followers.

We had a college do that in a near by town. Our mall was razed and housing was supposed to be built there (there have been lots of issues on that).

But before the apartment buildings were proposed for the site, I was thinking, "Wouldn't actually be cool to live inside the mall space?" Convert each store an apartment or two and the department stores to some kind of luxury apartments. Some part of the mall (like the food court) could be a two way business area, open to the public on one side and controlled access on the other side for tenants. Hair salons, restaurants, coffee etc. available to the residents without ever going outside.

The renovation might be too expensive, but I think it could be very cool. Maybe even as a retirement type development.

I know this doesn't really belong here but...

Many years ago now "everyone" was always talking about Rush Limbaugh.

One day I was out driving around and I hit the wrong button on my radio and it landed on Rush's show. I thought maybe I should listen to see what the enemy was up to.

    I lasted maybe 10 minutes.

    Was I shocked? Horrified? No.

Bored out of my skull. Worst ten minutes of radio I had ever heard, sandwiched between denture cream and penis pill ads.
