All 34 episodes of the BBC's Rough Science are on the Internet Archive. Made in collaboration with the Open University it aired from 2000 to 2005, showcasing scientists tackling engineering challenges using basic tools and natural resources.

OpusFluke,

@wonderofscience I remember some of (the probably later) episodes. Especially the one about making a musical instrument. Hours spent trying to make pipes "sing" by lighting fires under them only to realise they could just be struck for the same effect. Classic overthinking!

Hypatia (born c. 350–370; died 415 AD) was a Neoplatonist philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician who lived in Alexandria, Egypt.

She was a prominent thinker in Alexandria where she taught philosophy and astronomy. Hypatia constructed astrolabes and hydrometers, but did not invent either of these, which were both in use long before she was born. In March 415 AD, she was murdered by a mob of Christians led by a lector named Peter.

The eighteenth-century English Deist scholar John Toland used Hypatia's death as the basis for an anti-Catholic polemic, in which he changed the details of her murder and introduced new elements not found in any of his sources in order to portray Cyril in the worst possible light.
Hypatia is known to have edited at least Book III of Ptolemy's Almagest, which supported the geocentric model of the universe shown in this diagram. @reginasbread Any of Discworld's "Witches" novels has this. Even Things from The Dungeon Dimensions back away from Granny Weatherwax. Then run. She Is Not Having It.

Greetings everyone!

I'm Simon Tatham, free software developer based in Cambridge, UK. Best known for PuTTY and a collection of puzzle games; various other things largish and smaller. Mostly tend to start my own projects rather than joining existing ones. (I think just because that's my idea of fun.)

This is my first time dipping my toe into short-form social media. (I was never on the birdsite.) Probably expecting to post random tech musings, with occasional maths.

OpusFluke,

@simontatham Warning: you are now having your posts followed by an idiot: me. Because I hold the human state is to be confused. So... I'm Mostly Harmless.

Interesting that a lot of people don't think Diablo is a RPG. They have very valid points. A lot to think about. I realize you can't box a game by a label, much like an adventure game or even point-and-click adventure game, but it's enlightening to think about.

OpusFluke,

@grumpygamer Always seen Diablo as more of an "Action/Adventure Game" like the Magic Knight series on the ZX Spectrum. It has the exploring, levelling, inventory management and timing/combat elements alongside a few puzzles. But that's just me.

grumpygamer, to random
@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

What makes a game a RPG? Ultima, Fallout, Diablo are, but Binding of Issac, Nuclear Throne are not (IMHO). Is Zelda? If you're playing a "RPG" what do you look for? What makes it a "RPG". Is it more than just collecting weapons and bumping stats? Most game have a form of this that I would not consider a RPG.

OpusFluke,

@grumpygamer Character progression/choices with consequences. Skyrim did this very well (in my opinion). They even factored in "hidden choices" such as "Destroy The Dark Brotherhood" or the ability to find the suicide note from the mother of one of your victims if you broke into a certain house in Windhelm. No clues or flags, you might break in for a Thieve's Guild job and find the consequences of your actions.
Yes, extreme examples. But it's a flawed classic. You play a role. Decisions are made

The problem is people won't quit twitter (a lot of my friends are still on there with weak excuses why) and reddit users will come back because most people generally won't do short term pain for longterm gain. It's just not how humans are wired and it's painful to watch. I hope I'm proved wrong.

OpusFluke,

@grumpygamer I still do Twitter and Reddit because I don't actually need to burn all my bridges to be in the Fediverse. And yes, I have done that in the past. I still miss LiveJournal but that is dust and ashes. My last FB post was warning people that if you see "me" there it isn't ME.
I'm active on Reddit posting nonsense on certain game subs (hello, !) and will fart about on Twitter. But Dreamwidth and Pillowfort aren't good on phones (yet) and I faff about here. I like it here.

I believe that everyone has the right to block whoever they want to block, but did they really have to go out of their way to message me and turn the blocking into a big riddle?

I have so many questions. Who is this person? What is it that I'm doing? What do they think I am exactly?

This is quite the mystery, and I fear it is one that will forever remain unsolved.
