With global interest in the last week, don't forget that, for those in the high to mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere, this week marks the typical start of the clouds season.

You'll need to stay up late. Due to night-long twilight, NLC are visible from around 23:30UT to 03UT. The early morning period is the most likely to yield displays.

For the first week or two, displays may be unimpressive. But they will soon grow into midsummer.

I've never seen colors like these on a Windy precipitation map before. And rain is indeed hammering down relentlessly here in . It's expected to be worse tomorrow. I'm glad I live near the crown of a low hill, and that nearby streets are draining well so far. I hope everybody under this storm is staying safe, warm, and dry.

Swiss physicist, geologist, and early Alpine explorer Horace Bénédict de Saussure died in 1799.

He is often called the founder of alpinism and modern meteorology, and considered to be the first person to build a successful solar oven. He is also considered one of the founders of mountaineering. His research took place in the Alps, particularly in the Mont-Blanc massif.

Obsessed by the measurement of meteorological phenomena, Saussure invented and improved many kinds of apparatus, including the magnetometer, the cyanometer for estimating the blueness of the sky, the diaphanometer for judging the clarity of the atmosphere, the anemometer and the mountain eudiometer. Of particular importance was a hair hygrometer that he devised and used for a series of investigations on atmospheric humidity, evaporation, clouds, fogs and rain.

I know of Metservice's 3-hourly coded data, but it's useless (you have to load a whole webpage and run javascript to see it).
