If you ever wondered what happened to that TextBlade kickstarter project, the answer is "they succeeded in building what they set out to build, and then a patent troll cut them off from being able to ship anything, ran them out of funding runway, and now they have several shipping pallets of working hardware stored somewhere in California, a stack of legal bills and no way to ship the finished, working product they've built."

RyunoKi,
@RyunoKi@layer8.space avatar

@mhoye Hm, I thought @eff would connect them to lawyers if they ask?

Wasn't there a bullsh*t patent of the month series?

After poking around more, I thiiiink we can do something here using Mastodon's built-in APIs pretty trivially. Not quite the same thing as an unopinionated ActivityPub bridge, but as Andy said RSS works as an interface for that for folks who want to get technical (whereas I think most folks just want to be able to auto-publish toots for their new issues!)

@alcinnz @smallcircles @ekis Team XHTML here.

I'm more inclined to client-side things. It's incredible what you can build nowadays. And we don't even scratch the surface!

Hey there 👋

I'm building a smol web app for someone that displays issues on , and resp. together.

Goal is to ease migration from one forge to another.

I could imagine that businesses and Open Source projects would consider this interesting for themselves.

Question for you: would you be willing to donate a small amount of money for tasks like these, so that I can focus on them? (Think Patreon-like funded work for the commons).

Thinking about how Folks held on to Twitter and Facebook for so long. I kinda feel that the folks who want mastodon/fedi to replace those networks perhaps didn't realise that for some of us, we'd already moved several times.

Once you've moved on from your first one emotionally it's easier.

So for those of us where this isn't their first rodeo what was your network pre Facebook? :BoostOK:

RyunoKi,
@RyunoKi@layer8.space avatar

@onepict

[×] StudiVZ

(Then Facebook for a short time, Twitter, Google+, diaspora*, Twitter, Mastodon).

I can't leave all the fame to Meta so I set up my own @gotosocial last evening.

Gently moving my followings over there.

It's a great opportunity to consider why I'm following different instances and how to organise the subjects.

I might end up with multiple accounts on the single instance to focus on a certain topic.

Moin 👋

@dev Hey there 👋

Today someone pointed out to me that @firefish is no longer.

Can you think of another account I could list at https://delightful.club/delightful-fediverse-apps/ instead?

How'd I architect a desktop browser engine if/when I get it? An embedding framework for other apps to benefit from?

I'd have multiple layers adapting my Argonaut Stack to the native UI libraries. I'd probably do it twice, for both GTK & Qt.

The lowermost would be an HTML/CSS (or CSV, text, images, etc) viewer widget., taking care to integrate screenreaders, input methods, etc! Alongside that create another form engine!

The middle layer would be a GtkStack widget.

1/2!

RyunoKi,
@RyunoKi@layer8.space avatar

@alcinnz I've wondered these myself and figured that I must separate model from presentation if I want to have any chance of maintaining (and properly document the data provided by the model).

It's not only about the toolkit but also about respecting the chosen settings of the OS. Colour palette, typography etc.

Incredible!

How companies manage to move themselves into a corner time and again.

Only to fall behind on updating their dependencies to the point of running on EOL libraries and frameworks.

The Big Rewrite is going to happen in a newer version of the same framework because we learned our lesson ™, amirite?

Vergangenheit an einigen teilgenommen. Für mich sind sie eine schöne
Erinnerung, die mich wieder Menschen online entdecken lassen.
Tatsächlich ist mein Feedreader seitdem auch wieder etwas gewachsen.

hey @RyunoKi I just came across your https://fedi.builders website adding some nice filtering on top as I was doing some updates to https://delightful.club/delightful-fediverse-apps/ are you planning on working on the site more? I would love it if we could add some more filters and then I could go through the project list and add a bit more metadata. I would love to add some simple ones like does the software support Webfinger and does it support Likes etc

If you want to support me on the journey to improve the fediverse, I've created a goal for it:

RyunoKi,
@RyunoKi@layer8.space avatar

@liaizon Thank you.

Yes, eventually I will work on it.

It was inspired by „What can I do for Mozilla?“ (domain expired, so look at Wayback Machine).

Right now, it's a Proof of Concept, that the delightful lists can be leveraged. In the hope that people will contribute to it.

@smallcircles can tell you more on delightful lists.

Big Tech drives overconsumption (Part 2) - @gerrymcgovern : https://gerrymcgovern.com/big-tech-drives-overconsumption-part-2/

My impression is that computing has potential here, but our business models are straight-up bad.

But yes, never take the numbers we give about our work seriously! We don't know how to estimate it!

RyunoKi,
@RyunoKi@layer8.space avatar

@alcinnz @gerrymcgovern I see several points coming together here. Additive vs. transformative being a big one..

The other one is giving a single number. In risk estimation it's more common to have a worst case / best case / expected case scenario (thus at least three numbers) to better gauge the variety.
