Born in 1885, Clara Belle Williams became the 1st Black graduate of New Mexico College of Agriculture & Mechanic Arts (now NMSU).

While a student, many professors did not allow her into lecture halls so she took notes from the hallway. When she graduated in 1937, commencement ceremonies were canceled bc a group of students refused to walk with her.

Williams persevered despite discrimination, earning recognition as a teacher & lifelong learner. https://libexhibits.nmsu.edu/onlinexhibits/cbwilliams/index.html

“Only in America do we accept weather predictions from a rodent but deny evidence from scientists.”

I visited my 5th graders school for their writing celebration today. A classmate’s essays began…

“Have you ever imagined what it was like to live in the 1900s?” 🤔

After years of research & another round of grad school focused on decision making in Congress, I’m fairly certain the U.S. is not nearly as divided as popular media outlets & polarizing politicians would like us to believe we are.

That gives me hope.

Me: Yes.
Guy: Wow! So your husband is taking care of them?
Me: Yes. He’s their dad. 🤔

PBS Kids Day was a treat. I love meeting curious kids & watching them marvel at . Children ask the best questions.

Four years ago our PBS team created this fun explainer on all different types of pickles! And it's still one of my favorite episodes.

This Saturday I’m excited to meet families at PBS Kids Day in Michigan!

I’m going to be talking to attendees about how oils are “hydrophobic” aka water-fearing with a fun demo where children can squirt colored water droplets into a glass of oil.

If you want to try our experiment with little ones (or adults!) wherever you are, here’s an easy at-home version: https://funlearningforkids.com/oil-water-science-exploration/

Born in 1896, biochemist Gerty Theresa Cori became the 1st woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (and the 3rd to win a Nobel Prize).

Cori faced gender discrimination & was marginalized for years. But she never gave up.

With her husband Carl, she discovered how glycogen is broken down & eventually stored as an energy source (aka the “Cori cycle”). They also identified the Cori ester. http://beckerexhibits.wustl.edu/women/cori.htm

Every species that ever existed for all of Earth’s history has or will go extinct. But humans, uniquely, have an enormous influence on who disappears when.

Our impacts account for 96% of all mammal extinctions during the last 100K+ yrs. And if we carry on as we have been, extinction rates will continue to rise.

The important part is recognizing that it’s not too late to change. We can. So I hope we do. 🌍

We were heartbroken to lose our sweet Happy last year. When we felt ready to welcome a new family member, this little peanut arrived with the name Capricorn & seems to fit right in. We think he’s pretty perfect.

Now don’t worry, I won’t bombard Mastodon w puppy pics, but if you’re interested to see him grow, we’re at https://www.instagram.com/adventures.of.capricorn?igsh=enZ6MW1ydmN5NDFt&utm_source=qr

And yes, I know not everyone likes Instagram, but this is an easy way for family & friends to follow his adventures from afar. 🐾

@geekgrrl We’ve been calling him Cappy. Our two previous pups were Happy & Cooper (aka “Coopy”), so Cappy fits right in.
