Hey literature people--

So, I was reading HG Wells and I noticed something I hadn't thought about. He writes in a style that's very weird, and but for the Victorian/Edwardian language might even be considered experimental now? Like, in The War in the Air, it regularly alternates between goofy comedic scenes and scenes of horror and violence. And in between THAT there are digressions about economics and engineering technology. (1/n)

StrangeNoises,
@StrangeNoises@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith not to lower the tone from those examples, but this was part of the weirdness of watching period K-dramas while I still had Netflix: You'd get whiplash from the tonal changes, from broad slapstick (with comedy sound effects) to sappy romcom to political thriller where people get killed on a regular basis; sometimes in the same scene, and sometimes allegedly based on real events or historical characters.

The linked document is being circulated amongst NHS service providers for young trans people. It advises cessation of ALL medical intervention for transition but goes further. It suggests that if the patient or parents continue to access trans healthcare outside their system, they should be reported to social services with the implicit threat that the children will be taken from their parents.

IF YOU ARE A YOUNG TRANS PERSON OR A PARENT OF ONE, IT IS LIKELY UNSAFE TO ENGAGE WITH NHS MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.

@goatsarah @cstross this country is basically becoming as bad as the reddest of red states in the US on this issue. And Labour aren't going to do anything. And Scotland isn't going to be a refuge.

Being older it hasn't affected me directly yet, but it's still making me increasingly anxious and depressed. for one thing, i'm sure they’ll get around to us that transitioned years ago. and for another, i mean, what a shithole this place is.

Is Ubuntu 24.04 ready to go or should I give it another month for late breaking fixes to fall in? I've got a working 23.10 and my experience with 23.10 was installing too soon after an Ubuntu release can lead to Sadness

StrangeNoises,
@StrangeNoises@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc my upgrade today went ok but I may have been lucky: @omgubuntu reported earlier: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2024/04/dont-upgrade-to-ubuntu-24-04-yet

StrangeNoises,
@StrangeNoises@mastodon.social avatar

@Lioh @mcc @omgubuntu yes, i did it with the -d (actually using upgrade-manager) and got away with it, but then, it's low-stakes for me. it's not my main machine, and it's pretty close to vanilla. mcc tends to do weird stuff that hits all the edge-cases so it would be just asking for trouble. 😜 also going from 23.10 to 24.04 is just not a big jump anyway, so there's not likely to be much worth upgrading quickly for.

StrangeNoises,
@StrangeNoises@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc @Lioh @omgubuntu i don't mean the hardware you're running on is weird, but what you seem to be trying to do with it (per the stuff you post), with various relatively obscure development toolkits etc, would seem to be exactly the kind of stuff that might break in an upgrade, regardless of hardware.

anyway on my dell xps fixing it so it doesn't go to sleep with the lid closed was in /etc/systemd/logind.conf, change all the HandleLid* lines to ignore, reboot. which i bet you already know!

StrangeNoises,

@mcc ah right. yes, that's a bit ambitious for linux. ;-) (aka: all these papercuts are why i ended up committing to mac; it just wore me down in the end. which is why i'm now only using the xps as a low-workload headless server and needed to stop it suspending on lid-down 😀)

Have you ever tried to measure a cat with a tape measure? It will make you question the solidity of dimensional space.

Pica, small cat
Height: 22 to 47cm
Girth: 33 to ??cm (ouch cm)
Length: 37cm
Length w/ tail: 66cm
Weight: 5.9 pounds/ 2.7 Kg
Max Length (Dangle): 74cm! oh no

she's getting longer.

Rate of Enlonganmentation
dML/dt: 1.2cm / second

No signs of increase stopping. Cat keeps increasing.
All clear! ALL CLEAR!
Soon she will be in all locations.

This was a bad project idea.

@futurebird @lisamelton i particularly love how, if you watch a black cat curled up sleeping, it looks like they're expanding continuously without actually getting bigger.

StrangeNoises,

@Garwboy it's all a pretext. they want to break Gillick competence for kids, they want to break bodily autonomy. there’s a reason the same people are also trying to ban abortion everywhere. it's the same people. they're just using trans people, and trans kids especially, as the wedge.

@davidbures there are lonelier paths to tread. this here idiot is trying to write a modern-looking/behaving desktop app in Swing in 2024.

today I found a bug. I mean, there's a lot wrong; i mean, even in Java terms it's the API that time forgot (older than concurrency, generics, enums, even older than Collections) and there's a lot missing, but after all this time actual bugs are few and far between. but I found one. and i rate my chances of getting a fix... low.

StrangeNoises,
@StrangeNoises@mastodon.social avatar

@davidbures tbh wrt SwiftUI the consensus out there does seem to be that it's just not ready yet, and Swift+AppKit is probably the way to go especially if you don't need it to run on iOS. not much good if you want it to run on linux & windows as well though... ;-)

goatsarah, to random

Dear UK residents. I’m sorry to be tedious, but I’m going to do the trans Cassandra thing again.

The government is now moving towards regarding trans people as effective children until the age of 25.

This will be established as precedent and then used to screw over any and all young adults who can’t escape from abusive parents, especially young women.

If you want to do anything about this, you need to fight for trans people. Yes, you. Now.

We all know that isn’t going to happen to any significant extent though.

As you were.

StrangeNoises,
@StrangeNoises@mastodon.social avatar

@goatsarah @christineburns they want to break Gillick competence. Trans kids are the wedge they're using. But as in the US, they were never going to stop there.

And extending "children" to refer to people up to 25 is also, as you say, not going to stop with trans people.
