I appreciate wanting to measure engagement, but I’m pretty fed up with links in newsletters being email tracking links with redirects. I’d say 80% of links I would otherwise find useful, are now utterly useless, unless I agree to being tracked. Which I do not.

@haruki_zaemon I haven’t fully converted to @protonmail but I do use their religiously with the on, and that supposedly blocks a lot of email trackers. I also use on my home router, and & in private mode. If they’re getting my info they’re gonna have to work for it.

Apparently a ban is being fast-tracked through a . I sent my rep @RepDonBeyer a note this morning:

“Please vote no on the upcoming bill working its way through the House Energy & Commerce Committee that would effectively ban TikTok. Aside from this being a potential self-inflicted political wound as 150M+ Americans use the app and would not take kindly to it being taken away, it does not address the real issue of consumer privacy rights.

“If the argument is that the CCP can access Americans’ data through the app, it should be noted that the vast majority of this data is available for sale to them anyway from unscrupulous data purveyors like Facebook/Instagram/Meta, Twitter/X, Google/Alphabet, etc. Closing this door will do little to stop the CCP from accessing user data readily available in the digital marketplace, and will only serve to alienate your constituents.

Can I block the operation of an browser extension by using a custom filter on on my router? Or perhaps using a @protonmail VPN config on my router?

I really don’t like my big bad business daddy digging into my personal health , communications, etc., & I don’t have admin rights on my PC to disable/remove it.

@protonmail @VTDARKSIM thanks. I already did it on a and it worked well, but we had trouble with kicking us out so we abandoned all hope. I just run the VPN on our individual phones & computers now so I don’t have to troubleshoot Sling every time my wife wants to watch TV.

IT snuck in as a browser extension & I don’t have admin rights to remove it. It has rights to see/handle/change all site data. I contacted IT & told them it’s problematic from a standpoint bc it has access to literally all websites I visit, including Gmail, protonmail, anthem, & MyChart. It even has access to the “anonymous” survey form sent out by corporate.

told me not to do personal stuff on a work PC if I’m concerned w/ privacy 😒

Hey

Is there a tool/app to plot a course & then enter a distance traveled to see how far along that course I am?

This year I want to / the equivalent miles between my home & (1204 mi). Most rides will be on a stationary bike & I’ll track the total distance on an odometer. But, I’d like a visual for how far along I am on the route.

Any suggestions?

@WTL I know right! I tried apps I already have (Google Maps, @organicmaps, FreeMapTools, Runkeeper) and some new ones (e.g. TrackMyTour), but no dice. I’m sure there’s a gazillion other apps out there, which is why I’m soliciting help from the Fediverse.

I can’t be the only person who want this feature 🤔

@randahl I mean, I know the US Congress is garbage at this point in time, but I’m not sure the ratio of bills passed to population is really a good metric by which to measure.

My company was purchased in December by an evil corp that will remain unnamed. They appointed their own CEO to our company, and he is asking for anonymous feedback via a survey. Most of it is canned questions with a rating scale, but there is one final fill-in-the-blank asking "If you could change one thing about working at <Company>, what would it be?"

Could anyone give me recommendations for a password manager? Google is basically useless now and I don't know anywhere else to ask. 😅

So far, I've never found one that I trust enough to use. I do understand the importance but I'm extremely, incredibly hesitant to hand over my passwords to a 3rd party program. I'm even more hesitant to use randomly-generated passwords that I can't memorize as a backup.

All that being said, here's what's important to me:

  • Transparency - public audits, published whitepaper, and/or open source.
  • Export to a printable format. I don't have reliable backups, so this is a must-have!
  • Works with desktop & mobile Firefox.
  • Works on Windows & Linux (I regularly use both).
  • Works on Android - not critical, but would be really helpful.
  • Can work offline (I don't trust any sync server to stay online).

For everything else, I'm more flexible. I don't mind paying a small amount for a better / more trustworthy option, either.

Any suggestions, recommendations, or just boosts are appreciated! Thanks so much in advance! 💙

@hazel I migrated from Google Chrome to @bitwarden a couple of months ago. The transition was a little slow because I had a lot of outdated passwords saved & I updated 90+% of them with stronger ones using , but now I’m set. Everything is working very well with plugins to Firefox and an iOS app for auto-fill, and I can generate new passwords fairly easily when needed. Highly recommend 👍

Finally bit the bullet and signed up for a free @protonmail account today. I’m testing it out but will probably upgrade to an plan since I’m looking to get away from the Googs (mail, calendar, drive) & was in the market for a I could eventually put on a router and my mobile devices anyway.

@protonmail I just wish the services integrated a bit better with iOS, e.g. showing on the share sheet, having shortcut & automation capabilities, overlaying calendars with work Exchange calendars, etc.

Specifically, so far:
• Showing on the iOS share sheet - I regularly save files from the web, my camera, etc to Drive. Accessing that directly from the iOS share sheet vs opening the Drive app & manually doing each one, is a big deal
• Having iOS shortcut & automation capabilities. I like automations; having the option would be great
• I have work (Exchange) & personal (Proton) calendars. Would love to see all overlayed in one place.

    @valkyrie I knew in the dark recesses of my brain that the googs was evil. I didn’t really even dive into this much but it was enough to push me over the line. Today I did some homework and settled on as my browser and as my password manager. I even picked up a for when I’m feeling saucy. I got everything ported from Chrome to Firefox & BW, but I have some work ahead of me to update & strengthen my passwords.

    All that to say, thanks for sharing.
