@melanie "Vermiculite was discovered in the mountains near Libby in 1919, and vermiculite mining quickly became the dominant industry in town. The mineral, which has many commercial uses, from acoustic tiling to insulation, is perhaps most widely known today as the small white bits mixed into potting soil. ... When WR Grace & Company acquired the mines in 1963, they were producing 80% of the world's vermiculite. However, the strain of vermiculite being mined was heavily contaminated with a number of asbestiform minerals that have come to be known as Libby amphibole mix." https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(17)30048-6/fulltext

ai6yr,

@melanie Most vermiculite produced until 1990 (or at least, 80% of it) was contaminated. 😬

"Coal seam fires, which can smolder underground for years before coming to the surface, pose a threat to firefighters due to the noxious gases they emit and the potential for burned ground below them to collapse. They are virtually impossible to extinguish and carry over from year-to-year smoldering under the snow cover. "

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@ai6yr Yep. Not a major problem (so far) but it happens. At the moment the Popovitch Creek Coal Seam fire accounts for 88 percent of the area burned things haven't really started yet as not much hot dry weather yet: Memorial Day to 4th of July typically the prime time for wildfire starts.

🤔 BBC article which appears to have been written in a creative writing class, LOL ...

Keywords: fortune teller , sandy beaches, wild sex parties, Europe’s biggest swinger community, former secret service officer and police officer, "being able to speak to the dead", "remarkable ventriloquist skills", "it all comes down to sex in a town with a lot of it already."

I think the story needs some international drug dealing to spice things up a bit.

ai6yr,

@JoeBeam Yeah, how could they have left something like that out?!?! LOL.

Can't have been too bad, if they got injured over Turkey but didn't land until Dublin 🤔

OODA Loop reminder: you need to constantly re-evaluate the situation and READJUST your assessment of a situation to fit; if you make a decision at one point in time, that is not a "philosophy" but a decision point at that point in time.

ai6yr,

**For example, at one point, 100% masking, N95 outdoors in a crowd was the RIGHT THING to do. Today? Depends on your personal situation/vulnerability, vaccination status, prior exposure, etc.--and people should be educated enough to make their choice: yes, crowd okay? Do I need to mask? Do I not need to mask? You adjust as the circumstances change. Next week? It may change again!

ai6yr,

@cy Well, in the case of wildfires -- adjust for the time of year, how much moisture is in the vegetation, wind conditions, heat/sunlight. In case of hurricanes, sea surface temperatures, overall weather conditions, development status in the main development zone. etc. etc.

ai6yr, to random

@ai6yr Are you grabbing the fire perimeter data from
https://services3.arcgis.com/T4QMspbfLg3qTGWY/arcgis/rest/services/WFIGS_Interagency_Perimeters_YearToDate/FeatureServer/0

Sometimes the NIFC FTP server has more recent perimeter data (KMZ file) based on an overnight infrared flight.

ai6yr,

@mappingsupport Yep, snagging from ARCGIS as I can pull the latest new data... but yes, FTP could have more recent data (but not as easy to automate).

"Seven deaths were reported in Cooke County, Texas, near the Oklahoma border, where a tornado Saturday night plowed through a rural area near a mobile home park, officials said. Storms also caused damage in Oklahoma, where guests at an outdoor wedding were injured. Tens of thousands of residents were without power across the region."
