I posted this screenshot from Terminator 2 a few years ago, and it seems even more true today: you should be preparing kids for an uncertain future (not the blowing things up and weapons, but disaster preparedness and survival skills). "Here's how to perfect your golf game" isn't gonna do it. #DisasterPreparedness#Terminator#SkynetDay
(Reposting from a long thread I posted in another universe...) Stuff they should know (all Boy Scout skills, btw): 1. Basic first aid. 2. Properly using a pocket knife and hatchet 3. How to build and start a fire (safely) 4. How to cook your own meals in the wilderness over an open fire 1/x #DisasterPreparedness#cooking
@ai6yr Being able to swim is fundamental. Knowing when to stay out of the water may be even more important.
If you get into the water, how are you getting out?
What's the temp? How long can you survive in water of that temperature? Having grown up in a port city in a northerly climate, it was drilled into us that getting into cold water is rarely survivable. Most of the year the water temperature was around 4C. You have maybe a minute before your whole body seizes up in that temp.
People keep telling me to watch "Twister", but it's never on TV or free streaming. But, I'm too cheap to "rent" it on Amazon Prime for $3.79. However, it was $2.99 at the local Goodwill. 🤔
@ai6yr They basically ground up giant chunks of ice and launched them from a tractor trailer lol. Great tidbit here on it from the making of doc: https://youtu.be/anUmbKa6mhk?t=1001
Absolutely stellar performance for my use cases, which are
A. hash browns
B. boiling water
C. eggs
Biggest issue:
A. cookware compatibility
Biggest benefit (aside from energy/no gas burning emissions):
A. extremely controllable temperature
Note: Getting other folks to try the induction stove did not go well; I am a technology early adopter and willing to experiment, no one else here is. They are comfortable with using what they have used, even if there are issues (lousy burner design here, for one).
@ai6yr@wndlb
Don't forget to highlight the reduction in indoor air pollution that especially children will benefit from as more people switch from cooking by burning with fossil fuels to using induction stoves.
@ai6yr I usually buy cookware from the TJX stores (HomeGoods, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx) - they usually have lots of induction ones. Probably because they get lots of cookware from Europe. A quick check can be done by grabbing magnetic chip clips in the same department and seeing if it sticks.
Gardening observation: after record rainfall in our area, my garden is going into "jungle mode" -- ie everything is growing very fast and large. Many volunteers!
In great contrast, the house I am staying at now (very close by) the garden beds are doing: nothing.
The difference is here they have removed all organic matter as a matter of course (previously thrown in the trash, now to the yard bin), and only used chemical fertilizers (for 50 years). Also used to regularly spray weeds wit weed killer.
At my house, every last organic scrap of food or plant trimming gets composted and turned into the garden.... Totally supercharges the garden beds.
"To fix the problems would cost an additional $11 per vehicle, and Ford weighed that $11 against the projected injury claims for severe burns, repair-costs claim rate and mortality. The total would have been approximately $113 million (including the engineering, the production delays and the parts for tens of thousands of cars), but damage payouts would cost only about $49 million, according to Ford's math."
@ai6yr huge fan. When we replaced our kitchen post-flood last year we got an induction range -- absolutely love it!
Here's a neat tip: because you heat the pan directly and not through the surface of the stove you can put down a silicon mat between the surface and the pan to catch any spills for easy cleanup.
@ai6yr we started with one of those Duxtop single things as well, and liked it so much we switched the range/cooktop over. I still have the Duxtop unit and want to use it outside the house.
Le Creuset pots work very well with induction (iron) and the enameled finish makes them relatively easy to clean
Hmm, finding a vegetarian Indian dish to make for dinner from scratch (which doesn't require a lot of ingredients I don't have and time) is an interesting challenge 🤔
Thus, why Indian restaurants and grocery stores here with takeout counters are appealing, LOL.
@ai6yr
Vegetable Biryani is easy to make, and most people enjoy this mild dish.
Green cardamom and star anise are the main things you might not keep at home.
Basmati rice is more fragrant, but you can substitute other long grain rice. https://www.indianhealthyrecipes.com/veg-biryani/
@ai6yr Person in my immediate family has a friend whose brother & wife were going to burning man, leaving 6-year-old son with grandparents.
But child got covid, and elders didn’t want to be exposed. Parents’ solution was to take him with them, which they did. They are at the event in these conditions with a 6-year-old child that has covid.
Yay! Finally, the vehicle won't start at all... rather than being intermittent. New starter or cables needed, likely. Has been spotty for months, but neither I nor my mechanic had been able to diagnose it since it was so intermittent. Intermittent car problems are worse than car problems. #carrepair
I got 5 bad alternators in a row from autozone a few years back. They still refused to refund my $$ just get another replacement. I finally resorted to picketing in front of the store. That got me the phone number for the regional manager. I agreed to try one more IF she would send it to a store with a tester and if it tested bad out of the box I’d just get my $$ back.
Sure enough, the 6th one was bad out of the box too. Got my money, went to OReilleys and got one that was good on the first try. lol
Future cargo trailer hauling MTB... if I can get it back up to speed. But now it has shiny stickers (but no tires... yet... since the online retailer I purchased the new tires from apparently sends their packages by mule train). #cycling#BikeTooter
@LabSpokane@HayiWena@bud_t Okay, will give those a try... because they match the new color scheme, LOL. (as much as I don't care what things look like, yellow and black works, ha, and I am all for bright safety colors nowadays).
@ai6yr@bud_t WD40 (Water Displacement 40) Is great for keeping fluid out of your missiles, and absolute hell on bikes in the long run, for that tendency to mix with grit and just keep it there. (I don't think it actually attracts grit, it's just a long term wetting polar solvent.)
High test alcohol (100% 2-propanol when I had it handy but even 90% will do) with a lot of agitation for cleaning, let it dry, and then hit it with the lubricants.
Sigh. Restoration company saying this is going to be a big job. All the carpet will have to come out, and ceilings and walls in several of the rooms. And I caught it within an hour and a half of the break. #plumbing#disaster
@ai6yr in the end it took about 2 1/2 months. We had to have our floors ripped up, drywall pulled out about halfway up the wall baseboards pulled up. And then everything repainted. It could’ve been done faster but some of it was just waiting for workers and materials. I hope you have a speedy recovery.
NPR has an article on personal actions you can take to help with climate change. (all valid, but all miniscule impact on the problem, IMHO.) -- i.e. no "stop driving, start bicycling/walking places", no "stop flying around for vacation", no "move down the food chain and preferably become vegetarian" #climatehttps://www.npr.org/2023/10/08/1202152408/climate-change-action
@ai6yr I mean, these aren't bad suggestions, and eat less meat is towards the bottom, but bike more, fly less should definitely be on here. So should shut down the fossil fuel industry... but not expecting that from NPR.
Glad to see "fix things you already own" is there.
When I give a public seminar, I always dedicate a whole page to GOTV and figuring out Who represents the audience I am speaking to.
The need for government level action which many people collectively can have a big voice — is the biggest missing part. Consider adding a slide like this to the bottom of your conclusions or intro slides for folks to just copy down the info.
Seeking eggplant recipe ideas, as I have one limp eggplant in the fridge and 8 eggplants growing in hydroponics (which may produce a massive amount of eggplant).
So far my repertoire includes 2 dishes:
Eggplant Parmesan (Italian)
Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (Chinese)
(the family hates eggplant, except me, so we never eat it 🤔 )
Also eggplant can be stuffed with various other things you enjoy.
I, too, would like to know about the squirrels. My husband has a bird/squirrel feeder attached to his office window. There could be entertainment potential there.
I do a lazy version of this. I dice up the eggplant and sprinkle it with garlic, onion powder, paprika, and parsley flakes first, then roast in the oven about half an hour. They're not so soggy that way.
@ai6yr I'm sorry you've had to go through all this.
Congratulations on having the know-how and drive to make the best of this situation by improving insulation, connectivity, and other infrastructure things that will make your home life more enjoyable.
