@ai6yr Industrial agriculture is fascinating.... But what really caught my attention was:

ai6yr,

@me_valentijn Correct.

@ai6yr

Well, that's not something which has been known since the 1800s..... not.

So nice of them to regurgitate old news rather than fix the problem.

I remember the very day back in 1984 when my brother came straight from school and told me about it. AN 11 YEAR OLD TOLD ME. BACK IN 1984. WTF. HUMANS.

Sigh.

ai6yr, to Insurance

If you are a homeowner and are insured by State Farm, Ohio Mutual, Pure Insurance, Westfield, and maybe Nationwide, you can get a FREE device to monitor your electrical system for arcing (one of the causes of house fires). h/t @w8emv

https://www.tingfire.com

andytiedye,
@andytiedye@sfba.social avatar

@ai6yr @w8emv Arcing would also play havoc with radio reception, so those of us who are hams are likely to notice it there.

Funny State Farm never mentioned this device to us though.

LorenAmelang,
@LorenAmelang@vivaldi.net avatar

@andytiedye @ai6yr @w8emv My State Farm agent had barely heard of and was amazed to hear I have one. The app is fun, you can see long term Voltage graphs and "real time" emission levels. And every Monday you get an eMail summary with V graphs for each day of the previous week.

ai6yr, to tea

My preferred cheap black tea. Oddly, only found at local Indian markets, and produced here by Unilever Canada.

babelcarp,
@babelcarp@social.tchncs.de avatar

@ai6yr Yes, it’s loose leaf, but it’s made by the CTC (crush, tear, curl) process designed to yield a reddish liquor as fast as possible. Pretty much the same stuff that goes into most tea bags.

I’m not telling you to be unhappy with what you’re drinking, but tea manufacturing that does less violence to the leaves provides a range of experiences you won’t get from CTC.

@rustoleumlove

ai6yr,

@babelcarp @rustoleumlove Oh, certainly, I have much better teas! ($$$) LOL... as I said, "favorite cheap tea" not "favorite tea"

ai6yr, to hamradio

LOL.. from a friend here, @orv

"Apparently May 20th (5/20) is 5.20 Day.

From another club:
On the 146th day at 5:20pm local time everyone get on 146.520 and see who you can talk to.
146th day of 2024 is May 25th and it's a Saturday!!!"

70MHz might be a fairly recent (for as much as that's valid in HAM radio land) add to the bandplan here. As only newer transceivers support it, if I'm not mistaken.

arnie_dxer,
@arnie_dxer@mastodon.radio avatar

@ChampersBE @ai6yr @orv hardly a lot of activity on 70 MHz that I ever witnessed. A selection of transceivers is limited, and I think TX power is limited too. But I think there are some Motorola handhelds that support 4m. BTW East of EU, they still have broadcast stations in the 66-74 MHz range, some are even my semilocals 🙄

For those who haven't been following closely, reported that the death of someone blown off the road in a tornado was a storm chaser, however, local officials have confirmed it is a local resident (see following post) #IAwx #stormchasing #wx #fatality #tornado https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/weather/2024/05/21/iowa-national-weather-service-severe-weather-outlook-des-moines-readar/73783200007/

@jberry@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr I did see this, but until now hadn’t seen it was JUST a resident.
What’s the MSM play here?
Trying to get people to stop chasing or they will die? Terrible news, rip.

ai6yr,

@jberry Well, the chasers don't have a great reputation for traffic safety, etc.... I think the many non-professionals chasing have gotten a bad reputation as thrill seekers more than helping anything (which may be true)

Yale Climate Connections: What you need to know about record-breaking heat in the Atlantic
The ocean heat could fuel an unusually active hurricane season. https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2024/05/what-you-need-to-know-about-record-breaking-heat-in-the-atlantic/

ai6yr,

"Waters across the Atlantic’s tropical belt — extending from the coast of Africa through the Caribbean — are hotter now than in any other late May on record, with over 90% of the area’s sea surface engulfed in record or near-record warmth. The extent of marine heat has never been greater heading into a hurricane season, outpacing by wide margins the previous late May record-holder in 2005, a year remembered for one of the most active and destructive hurricane seasons in modern history."

ai6yr,

If you are in Florida, warning has been sounded on the massive heat issues that may be approaching. Banning mention of the cause will not keep bad things from happening... Be prepared! #FLwx #heatwaves

Hmm, finding a vegetarian Indian dish to make for dinner from scratch (which doesn't require a lot of ingredients I don't have and time) is an interesting challenge 🤔

Thus, why Indian restaurants and grocery stores here with takeout counters are appealing, LOL.

@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr this is a pretty simple recipe if you have a can of coconut milk and chickpeas handy: https://yupitsvegan.com/easy-coconut-chickpea-curry/#wprm-recipe-container-7915

You can substitute other things depending on what you have available.

@ai6yr
Vegetable Biryani is easy to make, and most people enjoy this mild dish.
Green cardamom and star anise are the main things you might not keep at home.
Basmati rice is more fragrant, but you can substitute other long grain rice.
