I inherited a part ball of variegated yarn - which I dislike using because I feel it's disorganized, chaotic and messy looking. But I've seen this thing done online and decided to spend a day screwing around and tried it. It bloody worked. (Eventually) I'm amazed. A combination of programming and sorcery.

The Y2K bug is a great illustration that a well-handled potential disaster looks like “nothing happened” in retrospect. The fact that Y2K seemed to be a non-event is a testament to how seriously people took this emergency, and how everyone buckled down and averted a worldwide infrastructure disaster.

I started working at Honeywell Aerospace (AlliedSignal back then) in 1998, and by that time people were already working on Y2K issues. We were in the GPS navigation business, and there were real issues that would have caused aircraft navigation to go awry unless they were fixed.

People buckled down, found the bugs, ran simulations, got FAA sign-offs, and deployed the fixes to all affected aircraft well before Y2K. Thanks to the effort, “nothing happened”. @drahardja I tell people this every single time the topic comes up! I spent at least one summer working at a finance firm where my job was to look through old COBOL to identify parts that might have a date issue so that the developers (many contractors) who knew the language properly could inspect them further and fix if needed.
There's more glory in slaying dragons than in stopping them being so attracted to the village...

Had an amazing time - as it is every time - at Arcade Club in Bury tonight! Four floors of arcade machines old and new, consoles, PCs, and stuff like pop-a-shot and air hockey. Had a laugh when my man Peter said more than once "I'm sure the graphics on <insert game> looked better than this!" Nah, we've just seen so much in the last thirty-plus years that the old state-of-the art is primitive to us - plus, we were kids then 🙂

I don't know if this is a culturally-specific thing, but I do not know where our community elders are getting the spectacular amount of video content they forward around on WhatsApp and fill their phones with. Who is generating multi-minute "good morning / blessed day" videos of a spinning heart with clip-art text and a song in the background? Is Big Data Storage targeting Black people? 😂😭

Please help me with a long-term family tech support issue; Is there an easy way on Android to move WhatsApp media (if not the whole app) to the SD card rather than internal memory? Here are the constraints;

  • older Samsung (S7 IIRC)
  • current data/chats/etc must not be lost (included departed friends and relatives)
  • rooting is not an option
  • Android forks are not feasible either

Bonus points if you've made this work yourself and can explain it! Thank you :)

This scares the hell out of me. Not only are they going to use our photos for a purpose we never consented to, but I would expect the misidentification rate for Black people to be far higher than whatever is claimed. As someone who has been stopped by the police before due to a ridiculous case of mistaken identity, I can only imagine trying to talk them out of an arrest when they say "computer says this is you".

Even in the first year of my degree, the Computer Ethics module illustrated several horrible outcomes from computers "going wrong" (requirement/spec/programming errors, combined with carelessness) which are well-known in the field, but less so to the public at large. The average citizen or police officer won't believe that something as seemingly sophisticated as auto facial recognition could be wrong...

i don't have cable anymore and they basically blackholed all basketball games from FOX & ABC. i could never catch a game on regular tv, so am confused about what exactly is it that Lakers actually won.

@blogdiva @theotherotherone @luis_in_brief I think the idea (which seems to have worked) was to have some actual meaningful games early in the regular season where players are really going hard. All the group games were also regulat season games and were competitive in a way I'm not used to seeing in Nov/Dec. A decent take on the cup competitions that most football/soccer teams have!
