@mastodonmigration @GottaLaff @drahardja Trump is extemely popular with some exceptionally rich people - they could find the money for him to pay his fines. Am thinking of Musk mainly but there seem to be quite a few more. And, as you point out, Russia could bail him out too.

I see posts in my timeline saying “when will Germany’s politicians wake up to the threat of Trump?” (After his NATO statements)

Scholz: never awake to anything unless forced
Grüne: would do the right thing, but can’t always drive coalition forward on everything
FDP: will think about saving themselves first, won’t commit to spending anything
Merz: thinks he’s such a genius he could talk Trump around, can ignore people like Röttgen who are better

So Germany’s non-response is rather inevitable

The British Retail Consortium's quick data on January #retail sales confirms that as sales growth (of 1.2%) continues to lag #inflation (4%) we continue to see a squeeze/decline on sales volumes;

as this indicates, the #costofloivingcrisis (or as I prefer the crisis of #enforcedpoverty) is still driving down actual spending power for individuals.

We are still buying less, although spending more on what we do buy.

For consumers, this is what #recession looks like, whatever the formal GDP data

@ChrisMayLA6 Well, low economic growth means our overlords can continue to claim costs (such as labour) and taxes are still far too high. They will also so say public spending needs to be pushed even lower and services reduced. Economic growth will as a result continue to be anemic but as long as the wealthy keep taking it in, who cares? 😉 Or am I just being cynical?

@Spiricom EVs won't become widespread until their prices come down. That will happen eventually. Question is, will salaries still be high enough to allow enough people to buy EVs? If not, making EVs won't be economically feasible. Hadn't heard of the induction charging roads thing. I know it's possible, but I don't know why installing the things would need to be hidden.

@goodthinking @Lazarou I suspect Northern Ireland might eventually be able to detach itself from the union. Not so sure about Scotland. It's a bit too physically attached and England may be reluctant to let all the gas and oil cash go. Don't think King Charles would want his grouse shoots to go either.

@Wen Interesting that you mention the main ingredient of whisky. The speed that climate is changing means that water may well be one of Scotland's greatest assets and a very good reason not to let it become independent without certain very specific terms and conditions. @goodthinking @Lazarou

@Lazarou Scotland did OK on its own until England shoved sticks in its spokes. Whether Scotland would do OK on its own today is questionable but it could rejoin Europe and that might help. If Ireland unites, it might lead to Scotland trying to do the same. We'll see. @goodthinking @Wen
