The French government has banned TikTok in New Caledonia following pro-independence protests.

When asked about the legality of the measure, it basically replied that since the territory is not part of the EU’s jurisdiction, it’s perfectly allowed to ban social platforms however it likes.

What in the colonial crap is this bullshit. For fuck’s sake.

I finally did it. I used an LLM. A couple of months ago, MS added its Copilot to Windows. I turned it off. But the latest update shoved it back in my face and tried to get me to let it use my data. So I asked it a question: How do I get rid of Copilot? It suggested I uninstall it like any other program, but MS removed that option. But Copilot went on to tell me the exact registry key to change to block it from loading, and now it's gone.

I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

@antlerboy the Russian word for train station is vokzal, which goes back to when Russian engineers visited London in the 19th century and saw a train station with a sign saying Vauxhall.

Moved in to our building 3 years ago.

I have never been able to clean my whiteboard.

I have been for 3 years, trying every single internet tip and trick. Buying cleaning products etc…

Yesterday I finally bit the bullet and emailed our maintenance staff to say that: “I need a new whiteboard, I've essentially tried everything and now there's just no white space left".

About an hour later, someone turned up and with kindness slowly removed the protective film I’ve been writing on for 3 years…

Judge throws out case against UK climate activist who held sign on jurors’ rights

Don't worry, Westminster will introduce new laws to deal with that… Probably as well thought out as declaring Rwanda a safe country!

A ridiculous case - but we still have the GMC putting their oar in on behalf of the malevolent, incompetent maladministration.

So, Microsoft is silently installing Copilot onto Windows Server 2022 systems and this is a disaster.

How can you push a tool that siphons data to a third party onto a security-critical system?

What privileges does it have upon install? Who thought this is a good idea? And most importantly, who needs this?

When someone says they are a "Landian" in San Francisco, this means they're at worst a NRx fascist and the very best a capitalist feudalist.

These people are bad and you shouldn't make friends with then even if their job is interesting. This isn't a critique on accelerarionism, this is a critique on how Landians believe society should unfold.

You know that "windmills kill birds" crap?
That's part of the fossil fuel industry's smear campaign against clean wind energy.

"A study to be published in 2024 found that wind farms had no statistically significant effect on bird counts. But another kind of energy did. Fracking reduced the total number of birds counted in near shale and oil production sites by 15%."

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/investigations/2024/02/04/green-energy-fact-checked/72390472007/

    [Edit to add]
It's the same with the "windmills kill whales" crap.
