I've just upped my contribution to $11 a month. By my count, I currently have 11 (coincidence, I swear) sites live and using it. It's a no-brainer to keep it funded as best we can.

You can read all the details here https://www.zachleat.com/web/independent-sustainable-11ty/ or jump straight to the open collective page https://opencollective.com/11ty https://rknight.me/notes/202405231612/

Every month I pay subscriptions for Netflix, Spotify and Google. But none of them provide as much value to me as - its the best tool I know, and I use it for everything I can.

That's why I'm a long time supporter of the project - and now that it's going independent, you should consider becoming one too!

  1. Go to https://opencollective.com/11ty
  2. Sign up as a monthly backer
  3. Let me know and I'll get you a beer and a high five next time we meet

Wikimedia Foundation's Product & Tech team has been working on Citation Needed, an experimental Google Chrome browser extension that allows you to quickly compare what you’re reading online to Wikipedia’s content.

If this tool sounds like something the Internet needs & you would like to test it out, you can install it here: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/wikipedia-citation-needed/kecnjhdipdihkibljeicopdcoinghmhj.

Citation Needed is an early, experimental feature that uses cutting-edge AI technology. Your help in testing it and providing feedback is welcome!

How about a new image grid layout algorithm.

  • Supports more than 4 images well.
  • Layouts based on aspect ratio and box fit.

The failing of AI isn't that it gives wrong answers, it's that it mostly serves huge Capitalist corporations that do harm to people and the environment for their own bottom line.

If AI can actually improve the lives of ordinary people, I welcome it! But I've yet to hear about how that is happening...

So, no longer requires a username when signing up. You instead get assigned one automatically, of the form "idXXX" where XXX is the ID for your user record. You can change it later in settings if you wish. Current Mastodon versions handle this change no problem.

The username is only visible in two places:

  • The URL of your profile
  • When someone mentions you
So it's not very important. Definitely not important enough to be a required field when you register.

If anybody is interested in taking over that project, I'm up for a domain transfer. @aciccarello has indicated some interest, so teaming up with him might be a possibility

Mastodon, I need your help! Particularly folks who can do research in Japanese for me.

I would like to go to the ClariS concert in Osaka on Saturday 5.25. I cannot figure out whether it is possible for me to get a ticket (like, was there a lottery and I'm screwed, is there a place I can buy them first-hand or aftermarket, is it walk-up???).

Some info here: https://www.zepp.co.jp/hall/osakabayside/schedule/single/?rid=138383

I'm prototyping a fediverse sharing button. Anyone interested in giving it a try?

Feature highlights:

  • shows a logo of supported fediverse software
  • lets you share selected text
  • remembers the last fediverse domain used

https://phanpy.social is a pretty incredible Mastodon client. Entirely web based, looks great on mobile and desktop, you can configure your shortcuts that appear above or below the river of news.

Some screenshots from my own account: good notifications page, different kinds of toots get a different status, plus Boosts are shown in their own carousel.

I've heard one developer made all this, it's pretty incredible.

Boosts are rolled up into a carousel of toots you can view with sideways scrolling
Threads are shown grouped together and single posts from threads are indicated as such.

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.53 of , the simple, minimalistic instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

New user feature to search by post content (using regular expressions) or tag.

Added some (partial) support for Event object types.

Minor fixes: Allow unboosting your own posts (contributed by khm), CSS fixes for the Dillo browser (contributed by kvibber).
