A while ago my wife introduced me to Stand In Pride, where queer people can find stand-in family members for support and indeed often for big life events — when their biological families don’t show up. And so it came to pass that a couple of weeks ago I had the singular honour of walking Taylor down the aisle to marry Ruth. Family is what you make it. Love endures. Join me in wishing them a long and happy life together! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

A group shot of the wedding party on a staircase. Taylor’s wife is wearing a kilt in red, with a black jacket, and they’re kissing; other people are arrayed behind them in formal wear. Everyone’s smiling. 😊

This¹ popped into my feed again, and I want to add something else: being a bit shit at stuff and doing it anyway is specifically a radical, anti-capitalist act. ✊🏻 An underlying reason you want to do things well is because you’ve internalised the lesson that stuff only has value if it literally has economic value – if you can sell it.

Post your wonky drawings. Throw an ungainly pot. Make sub-par dinners. You’re literally smashing the system. ♥️

Why THE FUCK would you advertise a feature that skeevy men use to violate the boundaries and equanimity of women and other vulnerable people using a grab that feels exactly like an example of that? Like, I’m not making the argument that DMs are bad and shouldn’t exist (in this post), but why apparently lean into their worst feature??

It happened. Kid asked me if I had any photos of me and her mum as teenagers “or had the camera not been invented yet?”

Always love clocking the juxtaposition of the oil rigs (here for service and decommissioning) and the uprights for the wind turbines (being assembled here to be take out to the North Sea for installation). The past and future of energy production in one scene.

Can we redeploy a few outrage cycles for Musk from Twitter to the Ukraine drone attack story? I’m not qualified to speak on the specific geopolitics or probity of the move, but I'm confident in saying: no person should have that kind of power. Stumbled across this EXTREMELY 2004 PICTURE in my photos. By the looks of it I’m writing a review of Gmail. (Still use one of those folding keyboards with my iPhone when I’m travelling light.)

Funny story: one of the much-lauded features of Gmail was its spam filters, so as part of my testing, I signed up for a buncha porn sites (for science!). HOW WAS I TO KNOW my Gmail address was to become a key identifier on the web over the next decades‽

Type and design nerds! I’m considering commissioning¹ a queer² lettering artist or typographer to set a slogan³ – link me to beautiful work!

(Boosts would be awesome, and feel free to recommend yourself!)

¹ I hope to crowdfund their fee
² My definition is incredibly broad; if the artist self-identifies as queer, that’s all I need
³ Probably in a hand-drawn way rather than using fonts, but I’m open; to be used on t-shirts/stickers

omg this has just blown my mind in the most incredible way: (and, I assume, other sign languages) are evolving before our very eyes into one-handed languages, because of the rise of smartphones and video calling. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGJxangXQ/

It’s possible to think these two things are true at the same time: ① It helps everyone to add alt text to images, and except in very rare circumstances should you ever post images without alt text, and ② Ugh, I just wanna throw out a post and cba writing alt text 😩

② doesn’t trump ① but I think it’s good for the soul to recognise that both are valid. Anyway…

Given the widespread reports of Apple ID problems, corroborated by articles in reputable publications, often by victims of the very problem, it's absurd that Apple's status page reflects no problems. There should be systemic change to prevent this: https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/

chrisphin,
@chrisphin@mastodon.social avatar

@danielpunkass It’s also bad security practice. It affected me, so I checked the status page. If it had showed an error, I’d have been much happier knowing it was a legitimate bug, not a security compromise, and this is the behaviour I want big tech companies to train their users to expect. (But honestly the fact that they haven’t commented on it makes me think it WAS some kind of security issue, which may yet be ongoing. cc @glennf)

TikTokkers handholding lav mics make my teeth itch. Hate it. Hate, hate, hate. Clip it to your damned clothes.

(PS this is me trying to flush out of the woodwork people who will defend this practice with things I haven't thought about that will make complete sense.)

Weather was beautiful yesterday morning so I set up my desk in the garden to work for the first time this year.

By the time I got round to taking photos the sun had hidden behind clouds but still interesting to show, hopefully. I had my nice camera set up with my Elgato Prompter, which I use for calls.

Could see it even in bright sun! 😍 But the panel is orientated such that I couldn’t use polarising sunglasses. 😕 Had to fit an ND1000 filter when it was sunny since I love shooting wide open! 🌞

What the camera saw: me sitting in my garden in a dark pink corduroy jacket, with a blurred background. I have a lav mic clipped to my jacket and I’m wearing AirPods.

Request that would be slightly weird anywhere except the fediverse:

Literally asking for a friend!

I have a friend who’s a phenomenal artist who might be interested in getting known for , especially for building a lil’ community that would let them do . What should I tell them to tempt them to Mastodon? Where should they be posting, what should they be doing? Who should they be following?

@girlonthenet Haha! Coincidence, sadly, though I do love that idea! They were very pretty when they were first chromed, though sadly they didn’t last long! (And the nice thing about wearing nail varnish as a cis guy is that it has particular impact when you tell bigots to fuck off.)

craiggrannell, (edited ) to Emulation
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

I see with RetroArch on iOS, the “#emulation is illegal” rubbish has clawed its way back into the daylight. Emulators are legal. Yes, many files people load into them may not be legit but that doesn’t make the tech itself illegal any more than it makes e-readers, music players and video players illegal.

Maybe people should concentrate more on encouraging publishers to provide legal routes to play (and buy) old games than spreading rubbish about emulators.

#retrogaming

chrisphin,
@chrisphin@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell The whole thing has resonances with “no person is illegal”. Obviously I’m not drawing a direct equivalence, but that some people in migration may enter illegally doesn’t make any person illegal.

Also, I’d LOVE to see some sort of codification of abandonware laws, similar to the right to repair movement.

chrisphin,
@chrisphin@mastodon.social avatar

@CTD @craiggrannell Which is why a law that says these rights default out in different ways to now is the solution. So that you don’t have to get these rights; they revert to a new more open licence in law. Which sounds like The State Ripping Rights from Hard-working Creators, but that’s just what copyright law does. It’s just that this would need to be over a shorter term and with other caveats.
