ok, so my sons bought a heavily discounted "smart" #tv last xmas. a TCL with Roku plastered all over the box.

is there a way to root these tvs and wipe their OS?

rooting and changing the OS of smart anything, especially phones, need to be at the center of the right to repair movement, not just getting access to software drivers or hardware.

PS: i have avoided activating the Roku nonsense exactly for what the article describes.

@kuketzblog Danke für die tolle Pi-Hole Anleitung, habe gestern meinen alten RPi 1B (!) wieder hervorgekramt und ihm damit eine sinnvolle Aufgabe gegeben.

Aber eine Frage: Du empfiehlst OpenDNS als upstream einzurichten. Habe eben mal den Wikipedia Artikel (ja ich weiß...) quergelesen und so richtig sympathisch kommt das ja nicht rüber. Ich benutze lieber Quad9, die erscheinen mir besser.

Bin aber auch kein DNS Experte, daher: Was ist denn deine Expertenmeinung zu OpenDNS und Quad9?

18 years ago the pirate parties started to pop up to tell the world that copyright was broken. "make it opt-in! make it shorter!" we said but basically nothing happened.

Today I read: "Because copyright today covers virtually every sort of human expression [..] it would be impossible to train today’s leading AI models without using copyrighted materials". https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/jan/08/ai-tools-chatgpt-copyrighted-material-openai

@janl Depends on the password manager where you store the passkey. It may be that Google and Apple don't support a backup. Check out the (upcoming) Passkey support in KeePassXC. Create as many copies of your Password Database as you like.

    @kubikpixel Der Artikel behauptet es ginge nicht ohne Biometrie aber das stimmt nicht. Technisch betrachtet wird WebAuthn "user verification" vorausgesetzt aber das kann auch ein PIN sein.

    Bei dem Thema gibt es leider viel ungenaue Kommunikation.

    What's the best smartphone with a jack?

    Other criteria:

    • Long support period for security updates
    • Easy to repair
    • Open source software, firmware and hardware would be ideal

    But I will give up phones before I give up my 3.5 mm headphone jack, that's a hard line for me.

    EDIT: I'm requiring security updates into 2027, since Samsung offers that on two models I'm considering. That should help narrow the field.

    Watching the chatter around Reddit charging for API access and it seems sad for a lot of people. Mostly, honestly, it looks to me like someone at Reddit's going "you want to scrape our content to train your AI? Well, shitbird, you're going to pay for that" which is honestly not unreasonable.
