At what age did you start writing code as a programmer or software developer?

david,
@david@theblower.au avatar

@nixCraft My first paid coding job on an actual real system was at about 17 years old. (Porting some routines from a Vax to Oracle on Xenix).

For the past several weeks, whenever I post any media, I always take the time to add ALT text to it. Although it may be a little time-consuming, I believe it is important to describe the media for those who are visually impaired or have accessibility concerns. Do you also add ALT text to your media for accessibility reasons?

david,
@david@theblower.au avatar

@nixCraft absolutely. I have my mobile client set to prompt if i forget too.

    @jpmens One of the rare Europeans I know that has travelled these sorts of distances by road. ;-)

    david,
    @david@theblower.au avatar

    @jpmens We'll be doing a similar kind of distance in Oct/Nov on our trip to and around Tasmania from Brisbane. (1880km or so BNE -> MEL, ferry across the Bass Strait, couple of thousand kms touring around Tasmania, and then another 1880km home). The BNE -> MEL legs will be done in two stints, BNE -> SYD; SYD->MEL (and reverse obviously).

    I took this photo last year at Curtain Fig National Park in .

    This spectacular strangler fig is nearly 165 ft (50m) tall, with a trunk circumference of 128ft (39m) & estimated to be >500 years old!

    david,

    @ash @phocks I'd previously repaired my son's headphones with duct tape and paddle-pop sticks. So no judgement here.

    @ash if you have a soldering iron, you might be able to plastic weld that crack back together. Or there’s always superglue (cyanoacrylic).

    Very flat spare.

    English, why are you so stupid?!

    Bimonthly definition in the Oxford dictionary:

    Occurs twice a month OR every two months.

    How is that remotely useful as a measure of time?

    I love it when a subtle prank gains a life of its own.

    Someone put up a genuine warning poster for assassin beetles (not actually a threat but yeah, can hurt).

    I added the King Beetle, missing poster; and over the last week it’s gradually got added to by persons unknown.

    Things I should know better by now…

    Always test the cables before going to all the effort of cable management.

    I installed and made very neat, a 4m DisplayPort cable for our big boss today (luckily on leave) only to find after, it was a dud cable and didn’t actually work. D’oh!

    I ran out of biscuits so I had to bake some more, and because I accidentally put in too much butter, they ended up spreading which as an happy accident means that they are perfect for ice-cream sandwiches.

    TIL you no longer (since 2004!!!) need to specify the jJzZ switches to tar to deal with the various compressed formats, it just works it out itself.

    eg: tar tvf somearchive.tar.gz
    tar tvf someArchive.tar.bz2
