Is my first covid symptoms were last Friday, I’m not contagious anymore right? But I will test positive?

abbynormative,
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

@stephanie @shoq It's little more nuanced... if you test positive on an at-home rapid test, you're almost certainly contagious. If you test positive on a PCR, you may not be, because PCR tests are more sensitive.

If you're still having symptoms, safe bet is that you're still contagious. But you can be contagious without symptoms, too.

You shouldn't assume that you're not contagious until you get two negative rapid tests, two days apart. https://www.umassmed.edu/news/news-archives/2022/10/covid-19-rapid-tests-can-breed-confusion/

I'm going in for a tomorrow. Anyone have advice for me to make my life easier after the surgery?

I am not expert in this topic, but it does seem like if we want to continue having the same quality of life with easy access to electricity, we really need to work on putting our power lines underground. This has been an issue in both because of fires, and severe storms in the last few years. The utility companies really don't seem to recognize the urgency of getting this done.

So I have #cancer again, which means I can go back to being even more insufferable about people wearing masks when they're out and about. \o/

Just a reminder, if you can't wear a mask for a medical reason, the fact that other people are wearing them around you still helps protect you.

So you should be advocating that everyone who can, wear a mask, even if you can't.

#MaskMeansRespirator <-- KN95 or better #covid

Can we please just take a balanced approach and admit that Russian information warfare is a serious issue but not all statements we don't agree with are Russian propaganda? Why is the debate around this almost always phrased as all or nothing?

abbynormative,

@thepoliticalcat Fair, but a lot of us don't even seem to have self-awareness around this

Nancy Pelosi sufficiently pissed me off enough with her recent comments about ceasefire supporters that I just cast a vote for Marjorie Mikels, whose campaign statement focuses exclusively on highlighting the US military-industrial complex's complicity in war crimes. Mikels has zero chance of winning, but maybe, just maybe, she might get enough votes to send a message to Nancy that there are quite a lot of people who support a ceasefire in her district.

Fully sneering at the local Prop E ballot measure in , which would “allow” the police dept to do a bunch of shady shit, including use new surveillance technology without approval from the Board of Supervisors.

It's written to sound like there would be hearings and oversight when in fact there probably wouldn't.

The ACLU opposes it; basically all you need to know. https://www.sf.gov/sites/default/files/2023-12/Opponent%27s%20Rebuttal%20Prop%20E.pdf

Anyone noted that Covid sure is in the news a lot, lately? Is Covid the new Emanuel Goldstein?

abbynormative,
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq We're coming down from a huge surge after the winter holidays. In some places it was the biggest surge since the start of the pandemic. We're also really starting to see the widespread, long-term effects of covid as a new disease.

abbynormative,
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq These charts show the scale of the latest surge in two places in the Bay Area. Unfortunately I can't expand the x-axis to clearly show the dates. You can look for yourself at https://soe-wbe-pilot.wl.r.appspot.com/charts#page=overview

Beautiful. Common phrases in narrative responses to the question "What do you like best about ?" from my survey data. Especially tickled that "gay space communism" made it onto the top 20 list.

(common words/stopwords such as "in", "the", "of" etc have been removed)

There seems to be a significant percentage of people in the US who seem to be unable to use the two elastic straps on masks. I'm not being funny here -- like, they actually seem incapable of figuring out how to put one strap around their neck and the other behind their head. Normal adults, who are normally thoughtful people. It's bizarre this simple thing is so difficult.

abbynormative,
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

@NaturaArtisMagistra Hmm true but the people I've observed having difficulty had neither of those things 😕

Dear rando in my mentions: Yes, we all know there are other diseases besides covid. “Like cancer,” you said. I actually had cancer. When I had breast cancer there was zero danger of me giving it to my spouse or my elderly parents. There is not a raging worldwide pandemic of cancer that could be prevented if only people would wear appropriate masks and use adequate air filtration.

abbynormative,
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

When I say “Mask up” because of covid, the act of masking up actually prevents the spread of a shit-ton of other diseases. So maybe join the chorus and sing the praises of masking up instead of being a reply guy. Thanks.

abbynormative,
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

PS: I had breast cancer during the 2nd year of the pandemic. Not being able to go out and feel safe literally ANYWHERE, constantly doubting whether I could trust friends and family, and encountering unmasked people in the hospital during chemo and my radiation treatment was extremely upsetting. We could all save each other a lot of grief if we just looked out for each other and tried to keep everyone safe.

@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

Dunno who needs to hear this, but people are still dying of . A family friend just passed after catching it a couple weeks ago.

Please mask up and talk to the mainstream, more trusting people in your life who think they're invincible because they got vaccinated a couple times. They seem to be the ones hurting the most this round and are generally unaware of the risk of organ damage and long covid.

@abbynormative

Safety and CHOICE are the first issues. Mastodon can't even show respect to deaf users. I don't feel safe on mass transit.

People carrying guns on mass transit must STOP!

There are other issues but too deep for here.

abbynormative,
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

@NaturaArtisMagistra Safety can be an accessibility issue. Obv I don't know where you live but I have been taking public transit for 20+ years in a major metro area and have very rarely felt unsafe. I've certainly never seen a gun.

What would make you feel safe on public transit?

abbynormative, to random
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

A lot of no-car advocates really have their order of operations wrong. The first step should be making public transit as accessible and easy to use as possible. That includes things like making sure people have the personal mobility equipment they need to use transit, like wheelchairs and scooters. Making sure elevators are working. Making public transit free, if possible.

Eliminate the need to use cars first, then disrupt car infrastructure.

abbynormative,
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

Oh, and transit accessibility also means that passengers and drivers should be wearing a good mask, and making sure air filtration is functioning and up to standard for removing viruses! That's overlooked way too often.

abbynormative,
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

@ncrav @kaz Right, but Amsterdam had trams first and was already building out that infrastructure.

abbynormative,
@abbynormative@mstdn.social avatar

@NaturaArtisMagistra Gotcha. I can see why that would be a worry. In general, I think Amtrak is underfunded which creates all kinds of problems. But safety for all passengers should be a priority.

My original comments were more about travel inside urban areas. Long distance travel brings up a whole other set of issues! You are also correct that needing to travel with a lot of gear is difficult on any kind of public transit.

Hey there @mozilla -- my spouse and I were chatting earlier about what could be done about the avalanche of articles about LLMs that unintentionally misrepresent what they actually do (prompted by this bad example: https://www.livescience.com/technology/artificial-intelligence/chatgpt-will-lie-cheat-and-use-insider-trading-when-under-pressure-to-make-money-research-shows)

Would you be willing and able to lead a training for journalists to educate them and therefore the public? We all desperately need better media coverage of and LLMs.
