It's happening. Next Thursday, I'm testifying to the Copyright Office in support of a new copyright exemption for game presentation, opposite the ESA.

New blog post: I dug out my old copy of a favourite Japanese Mac game from 2004, and ended up discovering that it's had an official English translation hidden inside its files this entire time - that can be unlocked by just changing a single byte in the save file.

Someone created native Python drivers for the disc robot/autoloader💿 📀 :

https://github.com/mattsoulanille/nimbie-py

I might have a try at incorporating this in Iromlab at some point, as this would remove the current dependency on dBpoweramp's driver applications. It would also make it easier to adapt Iromlab for other platforms (e.g. Linux) :

:blob_cat_coffee: people thought the “fantasy” part of sci-fi/fantasy was the magical wizards and dragons, but really things like “computers will become smart if we make them really complicated” and “someday faster than light space travel will be easy and commonplace” are way more fantastical and less likely to exist than a dragon is

I saw a guy at the airport with a shirt that said “SAVE THE MANUALS” and I thought “Hell yeah, brother! You may need to reference them in the future. Glad to see another fan of documentation.” Then I saw a weird symbol like an H with a | down the center, and I realized it was a dude who just really liked stick shift cars.

An incredibly technically complex in xz (potentially also in libarchive and elsewhere) was just discovered. This backdoor has been quietly implemented over years, with the assistance of a wide array of subtly interconnected accounts:

The timeline on this is going to take so long to unravel

@glyph @eb I'm frustrated that big tech's efforts to increase core library security are "your project is too popular, you must use 2FA" and "the best reverse engineers in the world will find your bugs and put you on a 90 day disclosure deadline" and not "here is $100K/year and benefits to keep doing what you're doing at your own pace."

Serious question: Can anyone recommend someone in academia who does (or has done) reputable research of transgender representation in media?

I'm hoping to get at least 3-4 people who know their shit and ask them about THAT SECTION in Space Quest IV. I'm interested in historical context, analysis of the subtext, and of course a judgment call on a deceptively simple question: Is SQ4 transphobic?

Nasa are currently working to fix a computer error aboard Voyager 1. The probe's computer system runs at around 8000 instructions per second and has about 68kB of memory. Due to the interplanetary distances involved, even at light speed it takes 45 hours to send a signal and get a response. When asked about the unique challenges this poses, an engineer said "that's actually about average for a modern CI system".

ultra hat dimension and kitsune zero are on sale on steam and we still need all the help we can get to reach the end of kitsune tails development this year

ultra hat dimension is an adorable game where you solve puzzles with polite requests made while wearing the right hat which you can buy for just $1.64: https://store.steampowered.com/app/628830/Ultra_Hat_Dimension/

kitsune zero is an original super mario bros like platformer where a kitsune rescues a princess, err, i mean a cute boy, available for only $3.34: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1947550/Kitsune_Zero__Super_Bernie_World/

It's a miracle! Disk Jockey v3 for macOS is out!

It can now create disk images for many old machines! Atari ST! Amiga! Apple II! Akai samplers!

And its image analyzer is much smarter and knows a bunch of new image formats too! It can even export files and directories.

Grab it here:

I always had trouble skipping the "In the beginning" intro of Civilization 1 and the ship departure scene of the original Colonization, because it seemed random when they would finally accept my Escape press or mouse click.

Turns out the procedural world generation is done during those intros!

So the faster your system is (or the higher your cycles in DOSBox) the sooner that process is done and you're able to skip the intro.
