Fun Fact: The technical difference between "speed" and "velocity" in physics was only introduced during the 1900s after Heaviside-Gibbs vector calculus became standardized. Before that happened, "velocity" is just "speed" in a formal tone. This is why many scalar quantities are still confusingly called "velocity" today ("velocity factor", "escape velocity", etc.)

Nei giorni scorsi si è parlato di LLM, accesso ai contenuti, copyright etc.
In proposito è interessante il progetto di Anna's Archive, forse la più grande biblioteca online al mondo, che mette a disposizione il proprio archivio di testi a chi voglia addestrare la propria IA. A differenza di altri modelli avremmo quindi un dataset di qualità anziché la pesca a strascico su internet.

Esiste già Books3, che è al centro delle cause fatte a Meta dal New York Times perché contiene articoli di giornale e libri piratati (come Anna's archive). Meta si sta difendendo invocando il fair use, cosa che per me è interessante perché è la prima volta in cui vedo una grande azienda lavorare per ridurre il copyright, invece di estenderlo

Come dico da qualche tempo, il mestiere delle traduzioni è al tramonto. E non perché il machine learning abbia raggiunto la qualità umana (men che meno il tocco), ma perché è già sufficiente per ottimizzare i guadagni delle aziende.

Lasci a casa gente, generi roba di qualità media e ti limiti a farla rileggere a gente che sarà sempre meno e sempre meno pagata.

Il caso di Duolingo è emblematico.

Temp che il problema sia più profondo: ai proprietari di copyright interessa avere soldi, e una IA aperta e condivisa non ne genererebbe. Il motivo per cui a molti autori piace l'accordo proposto dal new York Times: inventando un diritto allo sfruttamento per training che si possa vendere, gli autori potranno monetizzare meglio il lavoro degli ingegneri, mentre il software libero resterà bloccato per sempre fuori da questi accordi.

Pensi che i testi tradotti siano un bene comune? Un sacco di gente non è d'accordo :)
Riguardo al vantaggio tecnologico, ho un appunto: Microsoft oggi è leader, ma fino a due anni fa era chiaramente dietro. Il vantaggio tecnologico cambia spesso, quello di cui io ho paura è un vantaggio normativo: se si decide che addestrare le IA viola un copyright, solo Microsoft potrà farlo nel futuro (pagando), e nessun ricercatore potrà innovare abbastanza per aggirare il problema.

Che qualcuno usi i beni comuni per profitto è inevitabile, e non si può evitare privatizzando i beni comuni

Per impedire a qualcuno (non tutti, solo le entità commerciali) di sfruttare il lavoro creativo così bisogna inventare un nuovo diritto d'autore, che copra il training. Ma se lo creiamo, diventa un diritto che può essere venuto come gli altri, e a quel punto solo chi ha i soldi può creare e sfruttare LLM, e traduttori e sviluppatori sono ugualmente fregati.

Sostanzialmente la stessa cosa che è successa a Napster dopo i Metallica: fusione di big tech e big entertainment, utenti e artisti restano al freddo.

L'idea di seguire una via etica, e non legale, mi lascia ancora più perplesso: non stiamo parlando di diritti universali, non credo che si riesca a costruire un consenso generalizzato sufficiente.

In finale: non amo la Microsoft, ma lasciargli sfruttare commercialmente i commons mi sembra il male minore.

P.S.: esistono alternative legali? Forse si, ma probabilmente finiranno come la SIAE. In teoria, un diritto generalizzato a fare copie e un contributo generale da versare al settore degli artisti. In pratica, una tassa che un settore economico vitale (tecnologia) paga a una burocrazia che distribuisce i benefici secondo suoi schemi inscrutabili. Di nuovo, artisti e utenti restano fregati.

Onestamente, non ne ho idea.

Nella mia carriera è normale addestrate i propri successori, sapendo che all'occasione ci sostituiranno. Per contro, noi abbiamo associazioni professionali e sindacati, perché il problema lo abbiamo affrontato nel secolo scorso.

La cosa più costruttiva che consiglierei a un traduttore oggi è di dominare i LLM, magari creando i propri, ma c'è una differenza culturale da attraversare che non credo sia gestibile, per ora.

A lot of this discussion is based on the idea that LLM are just techbros full of money, while writers are poor and starving. The objective is to kill this revolution like they killed Napster: big tech and big content merge (the Washington Post is owned by big tech already), leaving free software and little creatives in the rain.

When a person is famous, (or even just a little popular online) a skill they must learn to “ignore the haters” even a modest following of 10,000 people will contain “haters” (I can’t imagine what millions are like) — is normal, but also unnatural. In ordinary human interactions when someone expresses hate towards you — it’s a big deal the top priority becomes addressing the issue. But with thousands of people you simply can’t do this— you can’t engage with every criticism and gripe. 1/

I will say that the large account holders' idea for Mastodon does not impress me... Looks too much like a mall, where peddlers are able to sell their content to a large number of clients, and the clients are free to move around and chatter as long as it does not impede the peddlers' activity.

I'll repeat what I said in one other thread: Twitter has evolved to cater to big influencers because they could monetize the engagement, it's natural that on Fedi the same people will feel less at ease, because here their product is -in a very material sense- not as worthy and there is not enough money to cater to them.

So. Three folks I follow are echoing pretty much the same sentiment I've been trying to express and are spending less time here.

I'll preface with a reminder that you may very well feel my opinions are bunk. I am a successful YouTuber, after all, with all the privileges that entails.

But here's the brass tacks: it's harder for me to be here comfortably than it was on the birdsite. And to be honest, I think Mastodon's always gonna be this way.

I think I can support this theory: Twitter spent a lot of time optimizing the experience for some profiles they wanted to encourage to stay on Twitter (YouTubers, journalists ...), and those profiles will find a worse experience on the Fedi.

People who did not receive such a preferrntial treatment (mathematics professors, for example) seem to have a better experience migrating.

There's a lot of shit flying in the lately and a lot of times perspective seems to get lost. Yes, there are things we need to talk about, and yes there are things we will not agree on. And that's okay.

But leave the pitchforks and torches out of this.

Fedi admins put in the hours and effort and emotion into making fedi happen. Sometimes they make decisions we might not agree with. We should criticize, but we should not pile-on.
