I am so proud of myself and my society that my 15yo boy can come home and tell me nonchalantly about one of his best male friend's boyfriend. Like it's nothing. This is the future we want. Never would have flown in my childhood. And I'm sure it doesn't fly many places today.

hedders,
@hedders@mas.to avatar

@danielpunkass Yep. My two teens are the same. Gay, straight, bi, pan, demi, trans, enby, whatever - it doesn’t faze them in the slightest. Everyone’s just folk. The kids are alright.

The UK is bursting with diarrheal disease—cases 3x higher than usual

Cryptosporidium cases link to travel and swimming, but at unusually high rate.

@arstechnica I wonder if it has anything to do with private water companies dumping unbelievable amounts of raw sewage into our rivers? Just a thought.

When you're a news outlet that doesn't know Chernobyl is in Ukraine...

hedders,

@RickiTarr I'm actually impressed. Chernobyl is probably the most (in)famous place in Ukraine, even more so than Kyiv. Like, how does one not know that?

hedders,
@hedders@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr Perhaps, although call me a grumpy old man but I'm not sure that's a good excuse really. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings happened a long time before I was born, but I still know they're cities in Japan.

    What is it with the UK Passport Office's "recognised professions" list? What is it about a chiropodist, for example, that makes them a reliable countersignatory, but a shop assistant, for example, is not?

    hedders,

    @steve I've always assumed it was just a list compiled by a middle class person who couldn't conceive of a world in which one does not know multiple white-collar professionals socially.

    @RickiTarr This girl invited me to go to the Notting Hill Carnival with her. So we met up, headed out. We were on the Tube when she quite suddenly just ditched me; ducked through a turnstile and vanished into the crowd. Gone. Never saw or heard from her again. Never did find out why (this was well before the era of mobile phones).

    The more I learn about the British political system the more weird it seems.

    To me, as a Swede, it seems like a system firmly planted in the 17th century who someone put a 19th century overcoat on and gave a stock portfolio to make it appear modern.

    hedders,
    @hedders@mas.to avatar

    @WhyNotZoidberg that is basically accurate.

    Wait until you hear about how you get to be our head of state and wear a shiny hat and be immune from most of our laws because your great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather was a bigger murdering bastard than mine.

    (Yes, I know Sweden also has a monarchy. But it seems to be significantly less mad than ours.)

    Fascinating and insightful article on British accents and how they affect how we perceive people. If I’m really honest it is basically how my own prejudices play out in my head; I do tend to make snap judgments about people based on how they speak, far more than the content of what they say. It’s something I work on avoiding every day.

    @cyberlyra yep, it’s a real thing, and “caste system” isn’t a bad way to describe it, because while it isn’t as rigid or overt as e.g. the Indian caste system, its effects can be every bit as pernicious.

    Do you ever think about abandoned tech trees? Like how no one is working to design better drafting compasses or vellum? No one is perfecting vacuum tubes. No one is laser focused on methods to speed paint and accurate portrait by hand to send out for marriage proposals.

    Technological leaps make entire areas of research pointless— but

    What if just a bit further down the line on the old tech tree there was some bigger breakthrough we’ll never see? I think about this A LOT.

    @markusl Presumed, not deemed. As in, that presumption is rebuttable. Art 7(4) is relevant in particular. There have been some positive noises about the possibility of offering a paid option instead of targeted ads from some of the SAs. Meta has deep pockets and I reckon they figured it’s worth the try.

    hedders,

    @markusl Doesn’t mean it’ll work, necessarily. But it’s not unarguable.
