Happy Leap Day! And happy birthday to this writer:

As a leap year baby, I’m technically turning 10. But I’ve endured 40 years of bad jokes https://www.smh.com.au/national/as-a-leap-year-baby-i-m-technically-turning-10-but-i-ve-endured-40-years-of-bad-jokes-20240223-p5f7en.html

It's great that everyone is clutching their pearls in over the proposed Metrolink drilling. It's as if we didn't go through all this in 2001-2007 when the port tunnel was being drilled and none of the Northside Nostradamuses were correct

@ronanmcd I don't agree with them but on the other hand we flooded every basement we could find building the Luas, especially down near Jervis

humanhorseshoes,
@humanhorseshoes@mastodon.world avatar

@ronanmcd To be fair to the lads they were working blind as a lot of the services weren't marked on any of the service maps that the council gave them so when they hit a water main they didn't know it was there because it wasn't marked. The Luas had to reroute thousands of pipes and wires because it cannot be dug under

@ronanmcd Amateur hour all day long. There are some professionals and I am hoping things have improved but from my experiences with Irish officials across a range of departments is that making shit up as you go along is the norm and if you can make shit up and then throw this shit at the public thats a win.

@ronanmcd the airport noise thing being one of them. Wrote to McEntee and told her that she won’t get any votes under that flight path, folks have hundreds of planes overhead just as they retire

I suspect the death of Navalny was the final straw for leaders who thought there was the tiniest hope that Russia could change.

Putin is all-in, he has no successor other than an ugly power struggle between people worse than Putin, there is no semi-decent, democratically inclined replacement in the wings. And Putin knows he can now only stay in power through perpetual war.

When we look at in the UK we see a continuing move to insecure .

A new Work Foundation report finds that the proportion of secure jobs continues to fall (now well under half of all jobs), while both low to moderately insecure & severely insecure continue to rise.

The shape of UK's economy is ever more skewed away from the interests of !

It doesn't have to be this way, but changing direction requires political will: has Keir got it?

There's a passage in Sartre's article about how fascists aren't really interested in rational argument where he describes the fascist ending the conversation and "indicating by lofty phrases that the moment for talking has passed."

I think this kind of moment is more common than many people realise. If you're a marginalised person you'll have lots of experience of people with power over you just silently indicating they are going to do something to you.

The time to talk has passed.

"unstoppable favourite" this is exactly why I'm against awards and prizes in creative work. It turns out into a sport. And the ones that don't get awarded are seen as less worthy, something which is almost never the case. It makes audiences focus on what is deemed good, and stupid then seeking and funding what they like
