@ronanmcd also EU27 people aren't technically immigrants in other EU countries. Practically they are treated as such but in law they are citizens of the Union. Racists won't get that nuance

    I doubt we can read anything meaningful into the No No vote, other than it was a slap to the government

    humanhorseshoes,
    @humanhorseshoes@mastodon.world avatar

    @ronanmcd it’s like sending morons like Flanagan, Daly and Wallace to Europe which is a self defeating protest vote

    Narrow 2 way street. Cars parked asking the kerb on far side. I see a car coming towards me, I'm on my bike. I say nothing, no signal, but stop to let him go, although he's going onto the wrong side of the road. He gets to me, winds down his window. "Wha' de fuck are you talking about? Fucking cycle on de footpath ya c**t"
    Charming.

    @ronanmcd @humanhorseshoes yeah I agree. It’s too widespread and accepted. Disgusting. I got screamed at by a dickhead in a range rover for bringing my recycling to the recycling centre on Londonbridge road in Sandymount. She was incensed at my very existence. I haven’t owned a car for more than 20 years. Was hit by a taxi outside the Rotunda and just stopped driving

    @Doctor_J_ @humanhorseshoes @ronanmcd Ireland were playing Russia and I was cycling by where google is now and a clown who missed kickoff opened his door and I ended up inside his cqr in the footwell. No apology, he just closed the car after I got out and ran off.

    Dan Pfeifer writes that "Thursday night demonstrated the folly of Trump’s 'Sleepy Joe' strategy":

    "Donald Trump and the Republicans smelled blood. President Biden had recently been on the defensive about his age. A series of polls released over the weekend heightened Democratic concerns. The Republicans knew the press would treat a misstatement or minor gaffe during Biden’s State of the Union address as a campaign-ending transgression."

    Here's the final section of a letter to the FT from Brendan Kelly (Professor of Psychiatry, Trinity College Dublin) makes a crucial point...

    While there is no doubting the problems of mental health, to treat all aspects of these personal travails as illness is to focus too much on the individual and allow our toxic society & workplaces to escape their share of the blame.

    Absolutely right!

    @ChrisMayLA6 Exactly this.

    It's not hard to see why the reactionary right are growing, especially with younger voters (in Ireland). For decades the moderate, fiscal conservatives have done everything to promote economic growth and pulled up the ladder behind them. Services are cut, housing unobtainable while the rich purchase with cash, daily running of the country has no resources, despite cash reserves and years of tax growth. Vulture funds own everything. Their heedless handling of today's referendum is symptomatic

    humanhorseshoes,
    @humanhorseshoes@mastodon.world avatar

    @ronanmcd Drivers are fundamentally self-centred and lazy. Cyclists are dehumanised, demonised and othered. I have had a full licence for 30 years and not once have I tried to kill a cyclist. Getting a licence is too easy and bad driving is so lightly policed its a total joke

    Since it's free on Apple TV+ now, we finally watched 'Napoleon'. A fascinating movie, I had expected battles (which there were) but it also had a surprising lightness of touch re Napoleon's character and his relationship with Josephine. If you took the battles out, it would feel like watching a piece of theatre focusing on personal moments. I liked the way it was very un-wordy too, a lot of emotion without lots of words. Good viewing. https://tv.apple.com/au/movie/napoleon/umc.cmc.25k80oxl3vo69c8rimk8v81s1
