Was this ever released in the arcades or was this an NES only title? Either way I would’ve passed on both.

@nsonic79 It's an arcade game too I believe.

So the NHL just banned Pride Tape from being used by any player on the ice.

This is after they recently banned all ‘special initiative’ jerseys - including Pride Jerseys.

The continual erasure of the queer community continues, even in sports.

There is so much more to this than the two examples above but I don’t have the mental energy to catalog it all right now for this post.

It’s disgusting. despicable. wrong. and frankly scary.

I need a new major special interest, I guess…

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@haxd @britt I think the reason is because the NHL is trying to avoid the controversies that followed when some players refused to wear pride night jerseys in warmups. Not even in the games, but warmups. Most players are on-board with wearing them and support inclusion, but causes a few that refuse to (rightfully) get uncomfortable questions about why they avoid it.

In one particular incident, a Russian player wanted to avoid wearing it for what some speculate would be potential problems for his family back him in Russia if he did wear it, especially with the anti-gay/trans laws in effect there.

I was not aware that the NHL banned special initiatives like pride jerseys, and I'm kind of surprised that I wouldn't have heard of that on some of the podcasts I listen to, some of which were all over the stories about certain players refusing to wear them. All in all, it's a bullshit situation and showing some people out there that they are welcome to be a part of the hockey community shouldn't be controversial at all.

one of these is the leaked official, original source code of Pokemon Emerald and one of these is a decompile made by hobbyists trying to reverse engineer what the game is doing

and you know I wouldn't be posting this if they were not, apparently, switched at birth.

screenshot of an absolute disaster of completely obtuse magic numbers. THIS IS THE GROUND TRUTH SOURCE CODE

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@gregdavis @0xabad1dea It's not really a thing in video games as most games - especially back then - didn't reuse code from previous games so you wouldn't really be gaining any job security from doing so since it would all be rewritten again the next game anyways. I could imagine Pokemon itself being an exception to that, though but haven't looked at its source to say.

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@andwhyisit @gregdavis @0xabad1dea I'm not saying it didn't happen back then at all, it just wasn't a super common thing back then, especially not like today, where code reuse is a goal for cost/time savings.

Personally I'm quite pleased with the design of link cards in Mastodon 4.2, they finally feel on par with other types of media attachments. Links make the web go round!

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@Gargron What's your vision for how quote boosts would look? Or would it just use the same link cards as in 4.2 currently?

Looks like Activision has had a data breach with employee records, apparently nothing sensitive but that's a matter of opinion, really.

More gamedev layoffs with Kotaku reporting that contract developers at Naughty Dog, one of Sony's 1st party studios, aren't immune to layoffs themselves.

"Layoffs were communicated internally at the Santa Monica, California-based studio last week, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Departments ranging from art to production were impacted, but the majority of those laid off worked in quality assurance testing. The sources said at least 25 developers were part of the downsizing. Full-time staff do not appear to have been part of the cuts. Naughty Dog’s headcount was over 400 as of July. "

Apparently management is pressuring people to keep the news of the layoffs quiet.

Hmm, is it possible to filter posts by language also on my timeline and not just the public timeline?

I want to follow some people, but do not want to see posts or boosts in languages I can not understand.

@stefan @Gargron @ivory Mastodon's options allow you to select which posts you want to see in terms of post language, but that's of course, dependent on the person writing the post to set the language properly for the toot.

i dont know if im just uniquely bad at reading other peoples code or if everyone finds it incredibly difficult

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@eniko Comes down to how well it's written, if there's comments that explain the intended flows, that sort of thing. I've had to deal with some stuff that was so badly written before that I had an easier time understanding it through disassembling the code through something like IDA Pro than looking at the original source.

I'm officially looking for new work! Contracts are great as they'd allow me to be a bit more flexible; but full time work is most ideal. Remote (US). My resume lives on my site at https://jacky.wtf/work. I'm open to Ruby, Rust and JavaScript roles currently. (https://jacky.wtf/2023/10/Mh0p)

Played some of Battle Circuit today, it is kinda tough but the character designs are colorful and creative, the backgrounds are solid, and the levels are pretty short and boss-oriented. Definitely gonna sink some more time and a lot more unlimited continues into it.

@famousblueben Awesome underrated game.

jay, to GenshinImpact
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

So I started playing Genshin Impact a few days ago, mainly due to a friend of mine being really hardcore about it and wanting to play with them a bit and have another game to play together.

Still only a few hours in, my adventure rank is currently 9 and I think it takes level 16 to unlock multiplayer. To this point, I'm actually kind of enjoying chilling out and exploring around for treasure chests and such.

The game is obviously really trying hard to get you to part with your cash especially with the whole gacha aspect of earning new characters through straight up gambling. It's a bit of a shock after last playing Phantasy Star Online 2 which was probably on the other extreme in terms of fairness where you essentially only paid to get some quality-of-life upgrades like more item storage.

It's pretty, it's large and there's a ton to explore, and since I have zero intent on ever dropping a dime on it, I'm quite happy with the experience of playing it so far.

For what it's worth, it also runs extremely well on the ROG Ally at the standard settings at 1080p, which is how I am playing it. I've heard that it can be a bit rough running on the Steam Deck, but can't say I've tried it there myself.

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@bryceac I'm just rushing to get my AR up high enough to play with a friend of mine but other than that, taking my time and enjoying exploring and it's a pretty chill experience to this point. Having a good time.

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@bryceac Yeah, that's not so fun. Won't be as big a problem for me, thankfully.
